The plaza next to the cathedral in Guadalajara was the site for a massive class of the demonstrators. Both sides- Gay Rights activists and Roman Catholics- yelled insults at each other over the recent decision by the Mexico Supreme Court to uphold the law in Mexico City allowing both same-sex marriage and for adoption rights for lesbians and gays.
Roughly two hundred protesters on each side gathered for the dueling protests. The gay rights activists held up signs reading “Thank God I’m Gay” and waved rainbow flags. One of the Roman Catholic protesters ripped up a sign held by one of the gay rights protesters.
This was the second confrontation between the two sides in Guadalajara in as many days. The protests follow in the wake of controversial remarks made by Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez. He has alleged that the mayor of Mexico City bribed the Mexican Supreme Court to render a verdict in favor of the city. He is being sued over those remarks.
