Chicagoans Split On Marriage Equality

08/16/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Opinions regarding marriage equality are shifting in the direction of support. A recent poll in the greater Chicago-area found that there was an even split in the Chicago area with 42% approving and 42% opposing. Fifteen percent had no opinion. Those numbers change to 40% support and 46% oppose with 14% having no opinion when the respondents are limited to just the suburbs of Chicago, which is not completely surprising.

Chicagoans support civil unions 54% to 33%. LGBT Rights advocates hope to have a civil unions bill pass this year, but the bill that would grant full marriage rights to lesbians and gays has not advanced very far.

The poll was of 800 heads of household from the six-county Chicago era. Nationally, support for same-sex marriage has increased with a recent CNN poll showing support cresting the 50% mark. This has trended up as more Americans believe that lesbian and gay relationships are not immoral and as more Americans are exposed to lesbian and gay characters on television.
