Critical California Frontier – Prop 8 & this November

Melanie Nathan; 8-09-10

San Francisco -I have lived in California for over 25 years and have never felt a stronger need than now to endorse candidates and donate dollars to those who have historically shown support for LGBT equality.  The stakes are especially high as we head to this mid term election in the midst of LGBT disappointment with Congressional representatives, leadership  in D.C.

However, we must stand by our Pro gay and lesbian (LGBT)  candidates seeking our support in California, in the most vigorous and active way possible, especially in light of the Prop 8 overturn and its pathway to SCOTUS – including the possible 2012 Ballot measures that may further the pendulum swing!

While many are tempted to teach the Democrats a lesson this election, I am asking you all to give this  chance to Senator Boxer and other local representatives – to show even stronger leadership when it comes to our rights.   Regardless, we cannot and should not allow our loyalty to subside simply because we are disappointed with the big picture.  As I have said before this would not be a mere shot in the toe, but rather a bullet to the head, given all the work that pro candidates have done on behalf of our community.

Now is the time to lend you support. California is a frontier and gay, lesbian, transgender  and gender identity rights the last of the Civil rights that must be attained.

These candidates specifically must succeed if we are to sustain a  pro LGBT California – not forgetting the influence on  a National basis:-

So lets promote -

Senator Barbara Boxer incumbent Senator for California
San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris for Attorney General
Mayor Gavin Newsom for Lieutenant Governor
AG  Jerry Brown for Governor

San Francisco DA, Kamala Harris sent this e-mail to supporters today:-

Last week’s decision in Perry v. Schwarzenegger was nothing short of monumental. And it highlights yet another reason why the stakes in this November’s election are so great.

In District Court, neither the governor nor the attorney general was willing to put the state of California in the position of defending Prop. 8, and this played a key role. This becomes even more critical as the case moves to the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

As your attorney general, I promise I will never defend the anti-LGBT Proposition 8 in federal court. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my opponent, who promises to put the full weight of the state of California behind a defense of the discriminatory amendment.

I am proud to have the endorsement of Equality California‘s Political Action Committee, which works vigorously to elect candidates who stand 100 percent with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

That’s why I ask you to give generously to Equality California’s PAC today.

Whether we defeat Prop. 8 in the courts or at the ballot box in 2012, the stakes this November could not be higher.

Will it be Governor Jerry Brown using the bully pulpit in the fight for equality, or Governor Meg Whitman, who speaks out in strong favor of Proposition 8?

Will we elect candidates to statewide and legislative offices who will stand with us in this civil rights struggle?

Every dollar that you contribute today will be spent to elect a slate of elected officials who will join in our work to restore the freedom to marry, both at the ballot box in 2012 and in the courts, so please support the Equality California PAC today.

In solidarity,

Kamala Harris
San Francisco District Attorney &
Democratic Nominee for
Attorney General
