Melanie Nathan – August 05, 2010-
It is no surprise that Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina disagrees with Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision to overturn California’s gay-marriage ban. Lez Get Real has been reporting Fiorina’s “bad for LGBT rights” bid for Senate and encouraging readers to support Barbara Boxer, regardless of our anger toward the Democratic Congress at this time.
Fiorina says California voters spoke clearly against same-sex unions when a majority approved Proposition 8 in 2008, indicating that to her way of thinking any oath to uphold the Constitution would be nothing more than a promise to uphold corporate by-laws – you know those clauses that one can change anytime deemed capitalistically appropriate.
Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Wednesday that California Proposition 8 was unconstitutional when it defined marriage as being between one man and one woman, casting and inadvertent shadow on the in-tact Federal legislation – The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the desperate need for its repeal through the Respect for Marriages Act – (introduced into the house by Congressman Jerold Nadler - still yet to garnish support of Rep. Barney Frank.)
California’s Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Democrats, support the Prop 8 ruling. They called it an historic step forward for equal rights. I hope that this will result in a stronger push for the Repeal of DOMA. It is up to us in the community to hold their feet to fire and now is the time to express support for Senator Barbara Boxer whilst asking what she plans to do to take the repeal of DOMA further.
Fiorina is challenging Boxer in the Democrat’s bid for a fourth term in the Senate.
