Right Wing Extreme has decided that it will protect the Dove World Outreach Center on 11 September while it burns copies of the Quran on their so-called “International Burn A Quran Day.” The Gainesville, Florida church has stated that they want to host this event to remember the victims of 11 September and to take a stand against Islam, according to the pastor. They have been inviting Christians to burn the Quran, which is Islam’s holiest book.
The church’s pastor, Terry Jones, stated that he accepted the offer from Right Wing Extreme, which has offered between 500 and 2,000 men, because they have received death threats. In an email to CNN, Jones stated “There is need for this protection. It is absolutely necessary in light of the death and terror threats we have received. We have met with the FBI who have warned us of the threats they have seen, not only against us but against other targets in Florida. We have personally received threats by phone and many by mail.”
Jones has also proposed a meeting with Imam Abdul Rauf, who is working to build a community center and prayer space in New York not far from ‘Ground Zero’, in order to negotiate a “peaceful resolution”. What he seeks a resolution to is hard to tell since.
Religious leaders in Gainesville are planning an event billed as the “Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope” on 10 September in response to the actions Jones wants to take. The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations has called on Muslims and others to hose “Share the Quran” dinners. This is being done to educate the public regarding Islam and they plan on giving some 100,000 Quran to local, state and national leaders.
The local fire department has already come down on this event based upon fire codes.
Right Wing Extreme has now withdrawn its support from the Quran Burning event, saying it “does not glorify God,” according to a posting on its website.
The group is also asking the Dove World Outreach Center not to hold the event “for the reason that it may diminish the work of the Holy Spirit to witness to Muslims.”
While the group agrees with the Dove Center’s stance on Islam, press coverage of recent events, such as “Burn a Quran Day,” a recent “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” group on Facebook and the controversy surrounding a proposed mosque and Islam community center near ground zero in New York is “really inciting a lot of hatred and a lot of violence that’s going on,” Right Wing Extreme founder Shannon Carson told CNN. “We don’t want to be a part of inciting violence and racism anymore.”

Mat,
If I had word of someone doing this to a Christian Bible or a Jewish Torah or any other religious text, I would be covering it.

Ok, i’ll say it. This has more to do with RELIGION as as a whole that opposition to the Quran. Reasonable people who don’t claim to know with certainty the answer to the question of ”everything” (what happens when we die, what created the universe etc) don’t bother to get this worked up over someone else’s beliefs. Simply said, religious wars, religious persecution, religious fundamentalism all has one thing in common… RELIGION…. My sincere wish is that people will give up foolish notions about the sanctity of one supposed sacred book or another and the belief systems created and enforced around these text (written by men) and focus on activities that would make this place we share somehow not so hard for so many. Unfortunately I don’t think there is a chance in hell that will ever happen.
