George Michael, once one of two members of the group Wham!, appeared in court in London on Tuesday morning to plead guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. The singer went before a judge in the Highbury Magistrates Court, which is located in Islington, London, and admitted to possessing cannabis. He was arrested last month after he crashed his car into a High Street shop. He will be sentenced at a later date.
The judge needs to investigate certain legal matters which stem from a 2007 conviction and to investigate whether or not prescription sedative may have had on Michael’s behavior. He was warned that he could face jail time.
In 2008, Michael was arrested after being caught in a public toilet while possessing crack cocaine and marijuana. He has said that he has cut down on the marijuana recently, going from smoking 25 cannabis laden cigarettes to seven or eight.
Michael is in a long term relationship with art dealer Kenny Goss. He has also lashed out in frustration over people judging him for his drug use and penchant for casual sex. He has said “People want to see me as tragic with all the cottaging and drug-taking. I don’t see them as weaknesses any more. It’s just who I am. I’ve done different things at different times that I shouldn’t have done, once or twice, you know. Of course, nobody wants to regularly smoke crack.”
