Bullying To Death Needs To Stop

09/29/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Twenty-one years ago, a young man walked onto the side steps at Brandon High School, took his father’s gun, and shot himself in the head. I do not remember his name anymore, if I ever knew it, and the internet can only uncover so much information. What I do remember is that he was a victim of bullying, the same way that young Seth Walsh and Asher Brown are. In his case, he was, according to what I was told, bullied to death because his father, an atheist, wanted the school to stop renting the auditorium on Sundays to the church next door while it was renovating.

Was he gay? I don’t know. Probably not. It does not really matter, though, does it? Children will bully students with what ever they can, including calling them gay. As long as it sounds demeaning, they will use it to demean. I remember being called ‘fag’ growing up. I remember being demeaned because of my weight, my hair color, wearing glasses, my religious beliefs, everything.

Those who stand in the way of preventing anti-LGBT bullying stand in the way of preventing anti-religious bullying, racist bullying, and all of it. It does not matter if the bullying is against gay boys like Walsh and Brown, or the young man bullied over his religion who committed suicide on the steps of my High School while I was in it. All that matters is ending the bullying.

The problem is that those who seek to keep anti-LGBT bullying alive and well do so at the cost of the lives of others. They do it because they, too, are bullies who seek power through the pain of others. They do not care about the lives of others, and the certainly do not care about the lives of some lesbian, gay, or transperson who suffers in pain because these bullies want power. They want power so that they do not have to learn to cope with a new world where women marry women and men marry men. Their hatred for others is so great that they would rather let children die than allow anyone they do not agree with life.

May what ever God they believe in have mercy on their souls.
