DADT Protester Hit By John McCain’s Car

Last night in Phoenix, Senator John McCain was participating in the debate for Senate candidates. Outside the news station were protesters from the LGBT community, veterans organizations, and groups that support the DREAM act. The crowd was large a generated a lot of attention. Even Cindy McCain commented about it on her twitter page, “We are at the debate. Ready to roll. Lots of fun activists outside to great us!! Yahoooooo!” What Cindy didn’t mention was the activists’ message, “Shame on McCain.” Some were there to protest the war, others DADT, and others focused on the DREAM Act. Their unified cry, “Shame On McCain” would get take on a stronger meaning by the end of the night.

Following the debate as Senator McCain’s car was leaving the parking lot. While backing up the car hit one of the protesters, Luisa Valdez. Valdez, a disabled veteran, was pushed several inches by the car, which then sped off out of the parking lot. In the video below Valdez recounts the story to a local news station. While McCain wasn’t driving, he was in the car.

Valdez wanted a hit and run charge but according to Phoenix Police because McCain is a Senator this is acceptable behavior. Really? Hitting a disabled veteran is acceptable behavior. I thought Senator McCain wanted to hear from our men and women in uniform on this issue. I thought Veterans were important people in his world. Apparently this is just one more time Senator McCain displays his ability to flip-flop and his impatience.

Shame on McCain!

McCain is very quick to forget. For that reason it’s definitely SHAME ON MCCAIN!
I’m glad you’re ok Luisa. It must have frightening, because obviously they didn’t care whether they ran someone over or not.
McCain, you should be ashamed of yourself! You’d think he would come forward and apologize for this and other disgusting incidents that have happened in his presence.
But, I guess that sums the man up………so-called military hero who turns out to be a homophobic coward!

Thanks for the article and positive comments thus far! I just wanted to clarify a couple of things: The vehicle was not backing up: rather it was exiting a gated news station and came straight through whether we were going to move or not…. It’s UNACCEPTABLE either way and it’s upsetting to know that political people can do this, get away with, that city police officers are able to determine intent and not allow me to press charges AND that the news channel can state I declined to comment though obviously from the video interview with THEIR cameraman, I had PLENTY to say…

I appreciate the posting and thank you for spreading the word! SHAME ON MCCAIN!

I am speechless, and wonder about my own reasons for wanting to rationalize this, such as, “Maybe she wouldn’t get out of the way.”  The truth is, that doesn’t matter; McCain knew there were disabled vets in the crowd and backing into a crowd of protesters is inappropriate and aggressive, not to mention dangerous.  I am grateful to the protesters for their fearless courage; with many recent arrests and now this incident, I do not feel so alone in my outrage over many politicians’ flippant attitudes towards our civil rights.  And thank you for writing the article, as I’m sure it won’t be on CNN anytime soon.

Well, McCain forgets that if it had not been for the protesters almost forty years ago, he would have died in Vietnam.
