English Language Live Action Version of Mulan Legend Set To Star Zhang Ziyi

09/08/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
The story of Fa Mu Lan or Hua Mulan, known mostly to English audiences as Mulan, is the tale of a woman warrior. There are, of course, various versions of her life. Maxine Hong Kingston in her memoir The Woman Warrior tells at least one version of the story. In the version she relates, Fa Mu Lan is taken away to be trained in the arts of war and life by an elderly couple.

Zhang Ziyi is set to portray Fa Mu Lan in an English-language version of the legend being directed by Speed director Jan de Bont. There was a Chinese-language version of the film released last year. The legend was popularized by Disney in 1998.

Ziyi will undergo bow and combat training for the role. She shot to stardom with her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She has since done Rush Hour 2 and Memoirs of a Geisha. According to her manage Ling Lucas “She has complete trust in Jan de Bont to turm Mulan into a memorable screen legend.”

The original stories of Hua Mulan are incredibly bloody, and the version of the tale related by Kingston is about revenge more than anything else.
