Texas Thirteen Year Old Bullied To Death

09/28/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Asher Brown will not grow up to be someone’s husband or father. At thirteen years old, Brown shot himself in the head with his stepfather’s gun after enduring constant harassment from four students at Hamilton Middle School. The harassment includes acts that can only be properly categorized as sexual assaults since the bullies performed mock gay sex acts on him during physical education classes. His mother and stepfather, Amy and David Truong, had complained to the school, but that is something that has been denied by the school. According to the Cyprus-Fairbanks Independent School District officials, Brown’s parents never complained about the bullying.

The straight-A student was bullied to death because of religion, his clothing, his short stature and the belief that he was gay. According to the school district’s spokeswoman Kelli Durham, no students, school employees or parents reported that Brown was being bullied. Amy Truong replied to that “That’s absolutely inaccurate — it’s completely false. I did not hallucinate phone calls to counselors and assistant principals. We have no reason to make this up. … It’s like they’re calling us liars.” David Truong also said “We want justice. The people here need to be held responsible and to be stopped. It did happen. There are witnesses everywhere.”

That Brown was harassed and bullied was known to parents and students from the school district, according to comments left on the website of KRIV-TV Channel 26. They also claimed that the school district does nothing to stop bullying. According to Durham, the school’s counselor and assistant principal did receive an email from Amy Truong this month, but that it was because of ongoing problems at home and not about bullying.

The morning of his death, Brown told his stepfather that he was gay. His parents did not have any problem with that. David Truong stated that “we didn’t condemn” anything about his stepson being gay. It was David Truong who found young Asher Brown’s body.

On the day before Brown committed suicide, he was tripped by a student and fell down a flight of stairs at school, when he tried to get up, another student kicked Brown’s books all over the hall and then kicked Brown down the remainder of the stairs. The incident was investigated by the school, according to Durham, but no witnesses or video footage was ever turned up.

Brown’s parents just want the bullying to stop so that others do not have to suffer like they or their late son. Amy Turon stated to the bullies “I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done. I hope you got what you wanted and you’re just real satisfied with yourself.”

Anti-LGBT groups do their best to prevent states from taking up protections for students who are bullied on fears that it will result in a normalization of homosexuality. With every suicide and murder, the blood on their hands gets thicker.

This is awful! This poor young man must have felt so alone.
My son was bullied at school for years, but not for the same reasons Asher was. Fortunately, i didn’t go as far as being kicked down stairs etc. The usual name calling, and the odd pushing and shoving. I can only try imagine how it must have been for this boy.
I am surprised that there is no video footage, especially on the stairs. My son’s high school has video cameras on all the stairs, doors etc. I find it hard to believe that they don’t know who the culprits are.
I hope there will be some accountability for what has happened, and some responsibility taken by the school.
To continue to put the parents through hell by denying any of this happened, is totally unacceptable.
