Three Gay Men, Four Others Killed In Columbia- May Be Linked To “Social Cleansing Campaign”

09/07/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Gunmen are targeting ‘undesirables’ in Columbia and killing them as part of a ‘social cleansing campaign’ where murder is apparently alright but not homosexuality, prostitution or theft.  Gunmen gunned down four men in a stable on Sunday morning in Caldas and three gay men were gunned down on a street in Cucuta.  Both towns are in the north of Columbia, but on opposite ends of the country’s north.  Caldas is in the northwest, and Cucuta is in the northeast.  Caldas is not far from Medellin.

The four men were apparently abducted from the stable and killed elsewhere.  Authorities are checking out the different versions of what happened, according to Caldas government secretary Rodrigo Montoya.  The police are also investigating the murders of the three gay men, two of them appear to be younger than sixteen.

According to Cucuta police commander Colonel Jorge Ivan Florez, the gay men were murdered on a downtown street.  He stated “this could be a case of an evil known as ‘a social cleansing campaign’” given that in recent days pamphlets have been circulated around the city “in which unknown people are threatening thieves, drug sellers and sexual workers.”

Tragic. Very tragic. Also, I was very confused; it’s spelled Colombia. Columbia is a city in South Carolina.
