Anti-Gay Donor Writes Check to Meg Whitman

Melanie Nathan- Oct 07, 2010:-

EQCA's Geoff Kors and Activist/Advocate Mel Nathan

As if she did not have enough money; well after the controversial giving of  $125,000 to pass Prop. 8, San Diego businessman Doug Manchester is now supporting Meg Whitman’s bid for governor. He’s not alone. The National Organization for (Straight-Only) Marriage has pledged $200,000 to defeat Barbara Boxer and elect Carly Fiorina to the U.S. Senate.

Both Whitman and Fiorina oppose equality.

Whitman’s own website quotes her discriminatory position: “I believe marriage should be a union between a man and a woman.” She continues to tell Californians that civil unions are good enough for same-sex couples. And she says that she would defend Prop. 8 if elected.  As it stands now Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, although a Republican, has refused to defend Proposition 8; the reversal of the ban on gay marriage.  Meg Whitman would be horrific for our community.

Prop 8 reflects on the entire nation as it will probably rise to Supreme Court level and so a Whitman Governor spells disaster and she must be beat buy Jerry brown, long time LGBT ally.

While at LGR we support the LGBT quest to deprive Democrats of our purse strings- I encourage all whether in California or not to send a few dollars to the Brown campaign and to EQCA.  If we don’t stand up for equality now, Whitman could win the governor’s race and stop our progress toward equality. Manchester and other donors know this.

Equality California is also asking that we match the $25,900 – quoting Executive Director Geoff Kors , “$25,900 will help us to reach an another 80,000 voters through the mail and on the phone who might not otherwise vote. We can do it, with your support. We’ve never spent so much time and so many dollars ensuring that pro-equality candidates get elected. But the stakes have never been higher, and there are just 25 days left until Election Day. If Meg Whitman gets elected, our progress towards equality could be hindered for years to come. Help us oppose her and other anti-equality candidates by giving today.

Big donors to Yes on 8 like Manchester bought the ability to put discrimination on the ballot

. Now they want to put it in the governor’s office. Let’s stand up and stop them.
