Clint McCance, the vice-president of the Midland School District has stated that he will be resigning his seat, and he told this to Anderson Cooper on CNN. The story hit the blogs pretty hard and the rather homophobic comments made by McCance created a firestorm which has only just now begun to cool.
McCance stated “I’m sorry I’ve hurt people with my comments. I’m sorry I made those ignorant comments and hurt people on a broad spectrum.” Of course, the fact that he wrote that he wanted lesbians and gays to commit suicide and/or give each other AIDS on his Facebook page certainly did a lot of damage. He went on to disown his own comments and stated “I would never support suicide for any kids. I don’t support bullying of any kids.”
He also said “The words I used were unfortunate…but they can’t be taken back. All I can do now is extend my apologies for my poor speech.” He went on to say that he still disapproves of homosexuality, but that “I give everyone a chance to try to love everyone.”
His resignation may bring a measure of healing, but it is always hard to know just how much damage he has already caused. Unfortunately, statements like these can and do cause a lot of problems in the world.
The first of his comments reads
“Seriously, they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way I’m wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sins. REALLY PEOPLE.”
The second post reads:
“No because being a fag doesn’t give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives. If you get easily offended by being called afag then don’t tell anyone you are a fag. Keep that shit to yourself. I dno’t care how people decide to live their lives. They dont bother me if they keep it to therselves. It pisses me off though that we can make special purple flag day for them. I like that fags cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die. If you arent against it, you might as well be for it.”
