10/24/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
It could be worse, at least Sean Bielat, Representative Barny Frank’s opponent this year, did not compare lesbians and gays to child molesters, though fellow Republican Jeff Perry is accused of trying to shield one. Bielat just compares lesbians and gays to short people because, well, short people cannot serve in the military. Apparently Bielat and so many other opponents of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell have yet to figure out that lesbians and gays can serve in the military, they just cannot do so openly because, to paraphrase The Pirates of Penzance ‘one would think that the nation’s entire military was recruited from her homophobic institutions.’
Bielat is not the only one to make this false comparison. Recently, the Archbishop for the Military stated how the overweight and those with medical conditions and those over a certain age could not serve in the military. Of course, the rationale behind this is to say that being gay is like all of those and should exclude lesbians and gays from serving. . .yet none of them have managed to issue a single reason why being lesbian or gay interferes with people’s service to the military the way that being overweight or short does.
Bielat stated to the Boston Herald “There’s no absolute right to serve. Men under the height of 5 feet, 2 inches can’t serve — I don’t see anybody protesting. Where are the people standing in front of the White House, the short guys standing in front of the White House? You don’t see it. We understand that there’s no absolute right to serve in all these other areas.”
Of course, the majority of Republicans believe that homosexuality is a choice just like Colorado Senate candidate Ken Buck who stated “I think that birth has an influence over [being gay], like alcoholism and some other things, but I think that basically, you have a choice.”
The fact that the homophobes have fallen into the most absurd of all claims to try and derail repealing DADT just shows that they have no reason to not repeal it other than their own hatred and prejudice.

“Of course, the majority of Republicans believe that homosexuality is a choice”
And that’s based on…..what, exactly? And evidently the “majority” of liberal gays don’t have a problem with being thrown under the bus, AGAIN, so the libs in congress can score political points.
BTW, in defending DOMA, didn’t Obama’s DOJ “compare” homosexuality to incest and child rape? Didn’t they argue that Lawrence and Romer didn’t apply? That DOMA was rational and constitutional?

Let me see. . .keeping my eyes open, not being blind to my side’s views on things and actually reading the news. I observe, TGC, and by now you should know that. You should also know that we blasted the Justice Department for their stance on DOMA and Liberals for rolling over. You see, TGC, we are vocal no matter what and will go after our own side too- and we’ve been going after Obama a lot longer than many in the LGBT Community except for the true bigots who don’t like him because he is a Democrat. We gave him a chance, urged patience, but we do not and have not minced words.
Unlike your side which wishes to mince people. Having already gone over this with one moronic Republican who hasn’t figured out that this side wants to hurt people and recriminalize homosexuality, please understand that I have absolutely no qualms about debating you, but also removing you from this site if you do not have facts or want to listen.

It would be nice if men “over a certain age” really didn’t serve. One friend of mine, a National Guardsman, celebrated his 50th birthday in the staging area in Kuwait on his way to Iraq eight years ago. The National Guard has members above the ages allowed in the regular Army. They haven’t reached those ages on active duty as a member of the regular Army would, but doing “one weekend a month” at home. Dropping men whose sons are old enough to serve into a war zone, while able-bodied young men and women are denied the right to serve, has been one of the travesties of this war.
