Joe Hockey Opposes Same-Sex Marriage

11/06/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Shadow Treasury Minister Joe Hockey has come out against the idea of same-sex marriage in Australia. Currently, frontbencher Mark Arbib, the current Labor Minister, has called for a conscience vote on the controversial issue, but Prime Minister Julia Gillard has, so far, ruled it out.

Hockey has stated “I don’t agree with gay marriage. I think a marriage is between a man and a woman and that’s been my consistent view.” He does not agree that there should be a vote on the issue, nor that it would be advantageous for Labor to have this vote even though it is starting to lose the support of people to the Australian Green party on social issues.

He said

“The more the Labor Party talks about non-mainstream issues … the economy and productivity and a range of other things, the more they talk about other issues, the less Australians are going to listen to them.”

Of course, Hockey may be playing tot he old joke about how this is Australia where men are men and sheep are worried. Indeed, Hockey seems to care less if men are buggering the sheep just so long as they are not buggering each other.
