Robin McGehee Informs White House about Innovative BINAT Visa for Same-Sex Partner Immigration Sponsorship

See VIDEO Interview with Joe Sudbay   —–  Melanie Nathan; 11-22-10; Further to our earlier reporting  on   Robin McGehee’s of  GetEQUALWhite House meeting, I am now pleased to post this Video where Robin tells Joe Sudbay, in detail, about her mention of UAFA – a must listen for every binational couple desperate to come home or find a remedy.  As my friends and allies know, I crafted an unique and innovative Program, born out of my frustration,  to provide a special  binational VISA program,  to help foreign partners gain entry to the USA on legal Visas that could keep them here for extended period of time until they are able to obtain green cards via UAFA or Immigration Reform changes. I have 1800 signatures and need 1800 more by year’s end on the Change.org Petition that I created to further its progress until I can take it to our members of Congress.

I was most fortunate to be able to brief Robin about my work and this  interim measure for desperate couples. She took it to heart.   I believe I am the ONLY activist to work on this kind of stop gap measure and to have it mentioned for the first time ever directly in the White House made every moment of my work feel worth while.  But now we must pursue it vigorously. No one else is fighting for us as in this state of emergency. We must fight ourselves.

I was delighted to see how Robin took up UAFA  as an emergency cause and how she gave it such priority in her discussion at the White House.  In my initial chat with Robin, as she was leaving the White House, she told me she had mentioned my binational VISA-I let out a shriek over the phone, bringing my 5 year old rushing into the room to check if I was okay!

I don’t know if people realize how huge it was- as Brian Bond wrote on his note pad, ‘Binational Visa.’

I hope binational couples and others will take me by the hand and help me go to DC to get my draft and Visa in front of members of Congress. This is Carpe Diem.

When watching this Video showing how Robin asserted herself for binationals I am further inspired by the hope…. delivered ….  and so I am asking you to please look at the Binational Pledge below.  I have am working on raising enough money to fund the project so I can go to DC as soon as possible and fight for a special VISA pending UAFA.

Here is Robin confirming her  UAFA  mention and that of the BINAT Visa.

THE BINAT VISA PROJECT:
Contact: Mel Nathan
nathan@privatecourts.com

Since June, 2009, Melanie Nathan has self funded and developed this Project.  Due to the current election impact – loss of sponsorship for the pertinent legislation and failure in UAFA strategy, it is clear that Immigration reform will not happen for at least 2 years; same-sex binational couples need immediate solutions.

Urgent help could happen with a yet to explored special visa for couples similar to an R1 Visa in nature as an interim emergency measure; and also a moratorium on all deportations.  In collaboration with co-sponsors, Mel will lead an effort to provide immediate relief to binational same-sex spouses.

The Stakes for these couples are very high – and the stories of hardship are endless.  The lack of solution is unconscionable for the likes of the United States of America; and must be remedied as a matter of high priority.  “A client of mine committed suicide after he and his husband returned from honeymoon and the spouse was detained by DHS for a year, more are being deported, separated from spouses, some Americans are in exile, separated from ailing family and aging parents.  Exiles loose pensions, mortgages, homes, careers, some are simply too old to start all over again in foreign countries where they cannot speak the language.  These people cannot wait any longer. Can you imagine that this is happening NOW in the USA under your nose!  Congress is tied up with politics and cannot do a thing! Unless we do something interim and relatively easy like introduce a special interim VISA, the pain an reprehensible human rights infractions will continue on our citizenry watch!”

To pursue this we must raise approximately $50,000 in funding which will be paid  to the non-profit with whom Melanie will be working. (To be Announced)   The money is not payable until the non profit confirms our project and  – its acceptance of this Visa Project and hence all pledges are not binding until that time.  All money will be used to support this project, with a small management fee that will minimize the overhead of running a separate non-profit.

Information about Mel can be found at www.visualcv.com/melnathan and also at www.privatecourts.com, and her activism can be noted at www.lezgetreal.com where she is senior political editor.   The Visa currently in Petition form is at www.change.org. see below…

PLEDGES can be cut and pasted and emailed to nathan@privatecourts.com

Yes, I show my support for the BINAT Visa Project, a stop gap measure to reunite & legitimize same-sex binational couples (in committed partnerships or marriages) to live together in the USA, pending the repeal of  Defense of marriage Act, the passage of UAFA as a stand-alone bill and/or the inclusion of same-sex couples in Comprehensive Immigration reform.

I am willing to pledge the sum of  $___________________ on condition that the (to be revealed) Fiscal sponsor /agent approves the project and is able to provide the appropriate non profit  tax identification 501 (c) status:

Pledge is only a Binding pledge if the Project is fully approved and if you approve the fiscal Agent when revealed.

Pledges can be e-mailed to Nathan@privatecourts.com

Hi Lucas, Well I dont hold up any hope for CIR this year – it is near impossible. If it happens it will be a miracle and we do get some of those sometimes! I also believe that our leadership in DC hhas failed to get the attention UAFA should have had , similar to DREAM ACT and if had, then we would probably be up for a possible stand alone UAFA by years end. But instead they hid it in CIR and are now desperate to try and get it passed inside of CIR, SO unless our community comes out screaming screaming unlikely anyone will even look at UAFA as a connect to DREAM ACT by years end. In fact they are probably concerned that if the DO bring UAFA into session with DREAM ACT, they would end up with nothing. SO IE has made a backroom deal with the larger immigrant community at our expense – what they have done is say OK we will USE our people to deliver DREAM ACT to you- but then in exchange you must support UAFA in CIR next Congress! As for my binational VISA i have developed it but not yet received enough funding to take it through the process it needs – I hope that I can do something early in the new year . It will be tough so I need backing.
I wish that OBAMA would simply repeal DOMA during Lame duck that could solve a lot of problems for us all…….

Hi Mel, again, I have nothing else to say but another big thank-you for your immense hard work. You certainly have comforted us bi-national couples so much emotionally knowing that our voices will be heard eventually. I was just wondering though, what do you think the chances for either UAFA or CIR or Binational visa to pass by the end of this year are? Best -Luke-

Not my country, so I can’t sign. But as an outsider this visa idea seems ble*ding obvious to stop people being deported.

Hey Paul- how about we start a Petition for International Community on this issue? After all the International community is impacted by USA’s policy and failure on this issue. So lets head it
“It’s a Cryin’ Shame America!” Then all our International supporters can point the finger and feel heard too!!!!

Pledging $1,000. We all need to help if this means anything to us, or to anyone we care about, or even if you just think all Americans should be able to bring their loved ones home.
