You Rock Girl- Robin McGehee Gets Appointment With White House

11/17/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Good work Robin. The co-founder and director of GetEQUAL has finally gotten an appointment with the Brian Bond, the Deputy Director of the Office of Public Engagement. She recently shared on AmericaBlog her thoughts about the meeting. What will come of it totally will depend upon the White House itself.

While Ms McGehee and LGR have not always seen eye to eye on tactics, we are unified in our commitment to fighting for our rights.

She stated within her guest piece:

Ironically, over two years ago, my direct action to campaign for candidate Barack Obama led to his eventual election on the same night we watched our community’s rights to marriage equality get stripped away by ballot bashing with Proposition 8. We organized locally, we organized nationally and, now, the efforts of those who are unwilling to be treated as less than equal, have taken enough direct action to gain the attention and invitation to the White House. To be completely honest, as nice as it is to be invited to the White House, I just want to be home, as an equal, riding bikes with my kids.

In this, she shares much with Dr. Paula Brooks, LGR’s publisher and Managing Editor. While I got what I expected from Obama, which was never much, many within the LGBT Community saw him as a great agent of change. Many were sorely disappointed.

Ms McGehee also said:

Unfortunately, this Administration does not reflect the values I campaigned for and Barack Obama campaigned on when he said “we are not a straight America or a gay America, we are the United States of America.” Right now, it is still very clear that there is a straight America and a gay America and we are willing to do everything possible to break down that barrier.

Regarding the meeting that she has had:

Only two short days after being arrested for chaining myself to the White House fence and asking my President why he hasn’t fulfilled his promise of equality, I’ll pass through the same gate and by those familiar guard shacks today to meet with Brian Bond, Deputy Director of the Office of Public Engagement. I accepted Mr. Bond’s request for a meeting, but let me be clear – I don’t, for a second, plan on backing down. Not for a second will I be talked out of fighting for my community’s equality because of political pressure or the fear of not being invited back. Instead, I plan on following in the footsteps of Rep. Luis Gutierrez, an elected leader who showed the courage to fight for what he believed in by being arrested because of the lack of leadership other elected leaders are showing on immigration reform. As Rep. Guiterrez did yesterday, I too will honor the meeting they requested with me, but I won’t honor any closed-door attempts to quiet a community starving for their dignity and their equality.

The entire thing can be read at AmericaBlog, and it should be read.

The time has come for the Democrats to stand up for the values that they have argued for in the elections. Every day that goes by sees the Republican Party move further and further to the Right dragging with it not only mythical Center, but dragging the nation to economic and social disaster. The question is, what is worth fighting for? Are they willing to fight for the people who voted for them? Are they willing to fight for an America that embraces freedom, justice, and equality?

It has been fifty-seven days since John McCain held the military hostage, and sixteen years three hundred and thirty-one days since DADT went into effect. Where is our freedom, justice and equality?

Trust me Bridgette, “Jennifer” is AndrewW. Same language, phrases and schtick. He obviously has a google alert set up for “getequal” and “Robin McGehee”, because he/she is ALWAYS the first or second commenter……no matter the venue. He/she is trying to turn people against getequal and Robin, so it would really be fun if you exposed him/her. He/she started this cyber bullying against the National Equality March last year…and has dogged everyone involved in it since then. I can’t wait until he is unmasked, exposed and publicly humiliated – as he has done to so many others over the past year. Perhaps this can be a new project of LGR’s….”who is AndrewW?”

that would be too easy to find out. I just have to look under a bridge.

Jennifer – or should I say, AndrewW. Why have you created a pseudonym to post your usual schtick? Who or what organization (HRC, DNC, RNC?) is paying you to continually write this horse crap? You are obviously obsessed with GetEqual and Robin, but none of us have figured out WHY yet. But we will.

And Tif. Jealous much? Your reputation is that of a bully as well. Stop ranting and get on board.

    And Todd

Ok, I am not sure that Jennifer is AndrewW, as two people have now alleged. I will say that Jennifer has also gone by a wide number of names on this blog while making comments, and should stick to just one.

$700,000 for a low-level meeting at the White House.  Yeah, that’s exciting.  Robin will be told to “grow up.”

The White House has met with everyone LGBT leader multiple times.

What comes from this is that NOT ONE GROUP has pressured the White House on DADT, ENDA, or a broader agenda for Equal Civil Rights. They convert them to the insider-strategy, and this will happen to Robin. This is also why HRC is meeting with her. Already, she went from organizing counter-institutional marches on D.C. for “FULL FEDERAL EQUALITY” – to the single issue of DADT repeal, to line herself with the “narrative” as she calls it. She couldn’t be closer to the existing failed strategy and insiders, who are themselves former White House advisers. It’s amazing how fast the outside becomes the inside, and the independent activist becomes the “team” player in order to legitimize oneself or a new group joining the fold.

If actions say anything, we’ll see a very well behaved GetEqual after both of these meetings.

I agree.  I think Robin is worried about her salary because GetEQUAL is not getting donations.  I don’t think the White House is going to make a deal and HRC won’t get near these irrational activists.  She will be told that her efforts are damaging the LGBT Community.  That’s what most people have been saying for the last year.

To make sure your voice is heard loud and clear supporting Robin let the Office of Public Engagement know we expect them to push for DADT repeal

This just proves in my opinion, that we will get NOWHERE unless we start emplying the same tactics that GetEqual have.
