Melanie Nathan -Dec 14-2010- The Senate is going to be taking up DREAM ACT any day soon, perhaps any moment. We need to start pressuring our senators to add UAFA as a senate amendment. I’ve already called my Senators Boxer (co-sponsor) and Feinstein (who is not a co-sponsor.) Could the Uniting American Families Act – UAFA be an amendment that gets tacked on …and approved as an after thought?
WE WILL NEVER KNOW IF WE DO NOT TRY. …. the motto I live by -”you say: impossible – I say: have you tried – you say: no -I say: then not impossible!”
UAFA is a one page bill and has more support than it gets credit for. It is simple to understand. Perhaps it can be “dealed” in……..
If anyone should be pushing like crazy it is you – the LGBT person – each and everyone of you please pick up a phone today – even if it does not concern you directly. Please..
Call your Senators and ask them to include UAFA with the DREAM Act – the rescue of exiled LGBT Americans and those separated, by the fact that American gays and lesbians cannot sponsor their partners for green cards, are desperate for passage.
Abide the motto – try and then tell me it was impossible. Try in this instance is collective – it will take hundred of calls ….

Um……just a question (not a criticism), why isn’t Senator Feinstein a co-sponsor when she was so involved with Shirley Tan’s case?

Well Senator Feinstein introduced the PB for Shirley based on a set of very special circumstances. The Lesbian couple portion of which was alluded to – and added the a reason of unfairness to it. Sen. Feinstein supports the objective and principal of UAFA. Bottom lines she does not believe that the question of contractual nexus has been addressed – yes there could be criteria to thwart fraud. BUT Uafa does not deal with the formation of a contractual relationship between the PArties. On June 04, 2009 after I had a meeting with Feinsteins most senior staffer, I was clear what could be done – and I too thought it made sense- to fix it. Tiven fobbed me off in true style, same as she did when she asked me not to copy her on emails during the TAN case, to keep copying her staff. AND Kruse told me Senator Feinsten was a waste of time. SO for ALL this time Feinstein;’s concerns have not to the best of my knowledge been dealt with.

Well, the DREAM Act again has dwindled away, but what about UAFA? Why is that bill always have to disappear as well when it is, as you say, a simple bill with more support than any other!
So, now what for we the binationals? I keep asking that question on Immigration Equality’s website, and asking them why they are not responding to people who leave comments asking them what now. They do not respond, which I find disgraceful.
My partner and I are grateful to those who fight so hard for us, without who we would be totally dead in the water. You know who you are, especially our wonderful Mel here.
Maybe it’s that time of year when emotions run high, but we are feeling that we have lost the best chance we will have for a long time to come. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean we give up, but it does get to you.

My partner left fom the Philippines to go to Saudi for work. Sad,he cannot even visit me.. Hopefully soon we can sponsor our partners. It would be a blessing. Sad the USA is so far behind in many ways. Pass UAFA NOW!

This has affected me and my partner greatly – I was forced to move to Canada so we could be together. My family is now his family – and they are all in US. I am not sure who to contact and where ?? as I am in Canada and do not have a direct Senator, etc. Any help would be appreciated – let’s get the word out!!

Justin: Would you mind telling me which lawyers you used if you did?

hi FAEN, we didn’t use lawyers actually. My partner is Canadian and I’m American. We’ve been together for abour 5 and 1/2 years. We began the Canadian Immigration process about 2 years into it. It took about 9 months altogether – and although we look forward to the day we are able to finally settle back in the US – it was worth everything. Took a while but it brought us together!
