DAVID BAHATI on Maddow Part 1- Save the Children Kill the Gays

Melanie Nathan- 12/08/2010- David Bahati is no Betty Davis but has Idi Amin eyes – you be the judge! Something about the eyes- eyes that see a world so differently – through glazed fear and uncertainty, easily tipped by irrational religious bigotry. Indeed the story started compliments America – our own Evangelicals seeking to wage the war against gays at a venue where they would be believed, and where scapegoating would provide a seed of the kind that could easily viral its way through an entire continent.

David Bahati, a Scott Lively right wing evangelical victim, is just on of those suckers. Tonight he made it onto to the Maddow show tonight after having been barred from the supposedly intended purpose of his visit; a Conference. In truth Bahati has been nurturing anti-gay supporters who support his reelection bid; to accomplish the evangelical agenda of the spread of gay hate by pushing for anti-gay legislation in Uganda’s Parliament.

Maddow introduced the Bahati segment saying she has been looking forward to this interview and believed for a very long time that it would never happen. Prior to the show activists were speculating and wondering if Bahati had any idea what he was in for with Maddow’s perspective on Gay issues and her ability to throw the punches to knockout.

Before introducing BAHATI, Maddow re-introduced us to Anita Bryant – the belief that gays exist to hurt children, is shared by BAHATI and the supposed impetus for his Kill the Gays Bill.

Bahati is a man who is unwavering in his anti-gay sentiment he believes that by getting rid of gays, he will be saving the children. He really believes he is right on this issue. Earlier in the year Secretary Hillary Clinton was able to influence the Ugandans to take out the death sentence punishment that appeared in the Bill. Tonight on Rachel Maddow’s show he assured that the death sentence is out of the bill and that he will push for the Bill when parliament reopens. He is certain it will pass.

Maddow provided the C street Link in her introduction which we dealt with in an article about Bahati prior to this one.

“In Uganda we don’t see Gay as a human right. In Uganda we respect one another. 95% of Ugandan population does not support homosexuality because they recruit children. We must stop that to save our children. That is my job and my cause,” said Bahati.

Of the seven clauses in the Bill, Maddow mentioned the death sentences for a serial offender.

“I am not in a hate campaign. I love gays but I must protect the children who are being recruited.” What is interesting is this is less Leviticus and more recruitment.

Maddow pushed for what evideoce BAHATI might have regarding the recruitment f children. Bahato defensively comments: ” Its not an allegation its a fact. They are recruiting gays from children in Uganda. I am willing to publish these facts. ” Maddow is skeptical:- ” I have never s een such evidence even though I heard you say this before . ” She asks him what the recruitment tactics are.He says: The gays have $15 m to fight the BILL but they also use the money to recruit the children.” Pushing for more evidence , Bahati offers to put it up on the internet! “They go into school and entice them with money – pay kids to join pacts to become gay” he goes on.

Today however I know for sure Bahati is a liar and if I were Maddow I would not count on evidence of any kind. The man lies with ease as he did today. Bahati made some attempts to mislead some people today, but we will save that story for later, after he leaves.

Maddow says this is a myth and no one has ever bee able to prove this about recruiting children. Why have you not released Videos to this effect. Its a fact and a cause that you and me should support.

Rachel Maddow, an open lesbian, questioning a lying hate monger, who sat in cyber comfort – seemingly across but with Rachel in NYC and Bahati at MSNBC Studio in D.C. -one can only wonder what the super host was thinking and feeling. After all she is talking politely to a man who would have her and her friends for dead, I would have asked hm if he thought that she deserved to die because of his assertion that some gays may recruit children. It is like saying kill everyone because some commit murder! In any event I thought that there were sexual offender crimes in Uganda – is that not where so called recruiters should be categorized and punished?

The only logic that comes from this – is the fact that Bahati is a liar- there is no evidence of recruitment and if there were it would be a crime that would not require the victimization of all homosexuals and friends who know they are gay. If there is no evidence of recruitment, then I believe that Bahati has sat on US TV and voiced his intent to commit genocide. However more than once, BAHATI noted ” homosexuality is not a human right.” SO therefore in Uganda you don’t have a right to be a homosexual. That is reason for victimization.  He also stood firm that if gays flee Uganda, America and other countries should extradite them back to Uganda for punishment and that should include friends who knew they were gay and did not report them.

Maddow, perplexed, asks “What will happen to gay Ugandans if this is passed what do you expect gays to do?” Will they flee or spend life in prison. If Homosexuality is punishable by life,” Maddow pushed, “‘what will happen to gays in Uganda will they flee or become straight – what do you expect to happen?” Bahati again, ” We dont believe its a human right in Uganda. If we make it a crime, then who will be engaged in this will face the rule of law. and we will protect the children.”

A large group of LGBT activists had prepared and were geared to protest Bahati at the Studio, but out of respect for Rachel Maddow, we called off the Protest. We decided not to get in the way of the interview – but it was very hard to listen to him berate my being and my soul and attribute such foul intent to any and every gay person, as if one. It is ignorant and its a lie. He will be on her show again tonight (THURSDAY) already been recorded part 2.

As an Activist , I am sorry that this man has been made to feel welcome in this country – I am sad he has been given a voice – at all  and I am abhorred by the fact that he has been called a guest on the show of a lesbian host!

I dont want my chidren exposed to this. What about the rights of those of us who would rather not be involved. Dont we have rights? And that Maddow lady is clearly gay why wouldnt she defend herslef

I admire her for being able to be polite and respectful to him, and do understand the difficult position she finds herself in sometimes. However, this is an interview that should have been conducted by someone else. There is the danger that people will just say “of course she’s going to say that….she’s a lesbian herself!” We need to show that straight people too can find all this abhorrent and unacceptable in a country such as this.
I am with you Mel in feeling stuck in the middle with my feelings on this one. As I said, I do like Rachel Maddow, and have even written to her recently asking her to consider giving some attention to the LGBT  binational plight, because I respect her very much, but I am frustrated with turning on the TV, and just hearing about one or two LGBT issues. Do I blame msnbc or Rachel Maddow? No. I blame the likes of Immigration Equality and HRC for not pushing hard enough over the last two years.
I think I’ve started a revolution on the IE website. Every time they approve one of my comments, the ones that follow aren’t the usual “Oh IE you’re so wonderful!’ They are more “we’re unhappy with you, and want a change in your strategy now!”
I am waiting for them to ban me too!

As I’ve already said in another topic, Dr. Maddow said that at one point in the interview, she let herself succumb to an outburst. Not my idea of an outburst I’m afraid. I see why she would want to be calm and polite, but I thought she could have done more with this. I have that feeling a lot these days with her interviews.
While I understand the significance of having Bahati on her show, I personally would have put him on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show instead…..now that man knows how to let someone know that he’s angry with them. Ed Schultz too. In fact just about anyone else on msnbc.
I do like you Rachel, but you need to stop going on about how unhappy you are with issues, and then acting like a giggly school girl when you get the opportunity to interview your target.
It’s time for us to show that we have teeth……not lay down like lambs to the slaughter!

Janice, thanks for talking for many of us. I was caught between a rock and a hard place on this post. I think that he knew Rachel is a lesbian and so she knew he knew and it was important to her not to give him any ammo – to say queers are bad etc etc. however that said, the interview should have been conducted by a straight man who could have got m more out of him without having to succumb to the cloud of lesbian hanging over the interview.

I saw a video about a year ago of what was allegedly a “recruitment” video in Uganda. It was just your basic run of the mill safe sex video. I got a feeling anything that attempts to debunk the propaganda or teach real facts about LGBT people gets interpreted as recruitment.
