Florida: Mysterious Murder of Gay Couple

Melanie Nathan:-  December 28, 2010-  Six months ago, Kevin Mark Powell, 47,  received a double-organ transplant to save his life.  Now he and his domestic partner   Steve Adams, 52, together for 29 years,  were found dead early Sunday morning in their Wilton Manors, Florida, home.  A sister’s notified police after the men failed to show up for the family holiday celebrations.

Police, are currently investigating the murder but have no suspects just yet, nor a motive.

According to Queerity, the men had a Pomeranian named Petey, who was featured in a HGTV show after Powell had created a “home for his dogs within his home, including pet sized lighting and furniture”; a neighbor has taken him in for the time being

Wilton Manors police said Tuesday they had identified a person of interest in the case, but provided no details, citing the ongoing investigation. Police also were still searching for a vehicle belonging to the couple, a black 2003 Saturn Vue with Florida tag 989 VRL.

Adams’ sister, who was worried because her brother did not come to her home for the holidays, telephoned police, Kicklighter said. Officers checked the men’s home, in the 2500 block of Northeast Eighth Avenue, and found their bodies at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The couple  met at a gay pride march in the Cleveland area when Powell was 18 years  `They fell in love, and they’ve been together ever since,” a family member told the Miami Herald.

Powell and Adams lived together in South Florida for many years, first owning a home in Hollywood. They moved earlier this year to Wilton Manors, where an estimated 40 percent of nearly 13,000 residents are gay.

Adams worked as a registered nurse at Jackson Health System since 2005, said Jennifer Piedra, a Jackson spokeswoman. His most recent position was as a clinical-care coordinator in peri-operative services at Jackson Memorial Hospital, she said.  Powell was an interior decorator who set up large artistic displays for department stores, including Macy’s.

Powell underwent the kidney and pancreas transplants this year at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, and there was great optimism about his recovery, “He was really excited because he no longer had diabetes.”

Wilton Manors police said Tuesday they had identified a person of interest in the case, but provided no details, citing the ongoing investigation. Police also were still searching for a vehicle belonging to the couple, a black 2003 Saturn Vue with Florida tag 989 VRL.
