Melanie Nathan- Dec 13- 2010:- Robin McGehee of GetEQUAL is calling n the entire LGBT community to proactively ensure that DADT is repealed before Congress goes home for the Holidays. LezGetReal hopes that in addition we hold the Senators to a “No Holiday for You” chant until DADT is repealed.: “Last week was hard on many of us,” said McGehee Monday in a letter to supporters. “After many years of advocacy from the LGBT community and allies, a vote to simply open up conversation about repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was denied by the Senate.”
The grassroots leader, who together with other activists, chained herself to the White House fence, was arrested and then able to enter the White House by invitation, asserts that we h one ave more hopeful week before the Senate heads home for the holidays, because a bipartisan group of Senators chose to give DADT repeal a second life, introducing a stand-alone bill that would repeal this discriminatory law and should be voted on this week.
McGehee goes on to say “But we all know that we cannot live on hope alone — we must continue to take action in order to make repeal a reality. We’re not leaving the process up to the elected officials who screwed things up last week. Rather than relying on Senators to figure out ahead of time who’s voting yes versus no (known as a “whip count”), we’re asking you — as constituents of these Senators — to do the detective work yourselves.”

We all know that our community has made calls, gotten the run-around, and is expected to wait patiently for the “grown-ups” (i.e. the lobbyists) to do the work for us. We think that’s nonsense. If your elected official (or her/his staff) won’t give you an answer on how your Senator will vote on DADT repeal, we encourage you to organize actions that will make it impossible for them to ignore you.
Stage a rally outside their office. Call the local media. Stage a sit-in. Interrupt an event. Refuse to give up until you get an answer!

So as the TAX compromise is about to go through, we urge you all to make your mark, and to realize that we cannot leave this one to Solmonese and “Gay as Usual Inc. ”
