Melanie Nathan; December 16, 2010:- Darragh McGann to perform at “First” GLBT Christmas Carol Church Service in Ireland
Darragh McGann from Cork, Ireland, who has built up a reputation both as ‘The Singing Taxi Driver’ and as an accomplished concert performer, has been invited to perform at a Christmas Carol Service hosted by the Protestant Church in Ireland.
The concert which is being held at St. Anne’s Church, Shandon, in Cork takes on a new importance this year as it will be the first time that members of the LGBT community will be invited to both participate and attend a Christian Event in the region.
The invite was issued by the Pastor of the Church, Rev Brian O’Rourke, who at a recent awards night hosted by the LGBT Community, formally apologized to all Gay People for what he called, “The terrible wrongs said and done against God’s own people” and he begged forgiveness for the Christian Church turning its back on its people.
Christianity and Spirituality have always been a key part of Darragh McGann’s life and he expressed that he is personally both honored and humbled to be invited to perform “O Holy Night” at an event which will demonstrate the true meaning of Christian fellowship with all people, regardless of their orientation.
Speaking exclusively to Melanie Nathan of LezGetReal, Darragh explained how it was just earlier this year that he found the courage to “come out” and that it was music and performance that helped him to face his own reality as a gay person. “To be presented with the opportunity to be the first ever openly Gay Singer to perform under official invitation in a Christian Church means the world to me, and I hope that this will be just the beginning for all Gay people to be welcomed in their own respective faith communities”.
Darragh told Melanie that since coming out to both family and friends, he feels a new freedom both as a person and also as a professional singer. “To be true to myself first was the most important thing to do, and now everywhere I go and perform, when asked I will always say to people that I am so very proud to be gay, and there is nothing at all wrong with been Gay”.
An accomplished singer on stage, Darragh has performed four concerts this year, in the US, and next March he will perform a special benefit concert in New Orleans in support of the NO/AIDS Taskforce and The Forum for Equality.
In January next year, Darragh will begin recording his new album and he plans to put a special dedication on it to all who have found self acceptance in being who they are, to all out LGBT people, most often something that is difficult to accomplish.
