And with that, it was done. The end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is now assured barring the Republican’s ability to do something nasty like interrupt the process. Advocates are calling for as quick a certification process as possible, and even President Barack Obama acknowledged the fact that the repeal will have to be done swiftly now. In all likelihood, the repeal process will take no more than a year, but people are being incredibly cagy about actual details regarding how long it will take.
The signing ends a two year battle to get civil rights advanced for lesbians and gays in the military. During this time, it would be appropriate for the Department of Defense to also review and publicize why transpeople are currently barred from service.
