When Jimmy LaSalvia either miraculously grows a womb or starts actually being interested in women, then he might have some standing when it comes to the issue of abortion. Instead, he has no actual standing when it comes to debating this massive government intrusion into people’s lives and businesses. In a press release, LaSalvia, the executive director of the sell out group GOProud, said “We applaud the bipartisan introduction of the ‘No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act’ and urge Congress to move quickly to pass this important legislation.”
He goes on to say in the press release:
“It doesn’t matter where one stands on the question of abortion; we believe that the use of taxpayer funds to provide abortions is a fiscal issue. There is no question, that in these times of out of control deficit spending and growing mountains of debt, it is unconscionable that one penny of federal taxpayer dollars would be spent on abortion. GOProud looks forward to working with our allies on the Hill to make sure that this bill becomes the law of the land in this new Congress.”
LaSalvia is already on record as opposing abortions. Never mind the fact that the safe access to abortions is important to one very key group within the LGBT Community- lesbian and bisexual women. Lesbians and bisexual women are at risk of being raped to “correct” them of their sexuality, and women do get pregnant from rape.
According to ThinkProgress, this massive GOP power grab would result in this:
- It would deny tax credits to employers or other entities that pay for health plans that cover abortion
- It would deny tax credits to individuals or entities that pay for abortion care
- Disallow medical deductions for payments for any health plan that includes abortion coverage or for any medical expenses related to abortion care
-Treat as income any amounts paid for an abortion from a tax-preferred trust or account, such as a health savings account
In other words, any woman who is not rich enough for an abortion is either going to have to go to the kinds of clinics such as the one run by the monster out of Philadelphia or be forced to have a baby that they did not plan on, cannot afford, or had because of rape or incest. What is more, this goes well beyond the pale when it comes to the small government rhetoric of the GOP. Apparently, they believe in small government when it comes to Affluent, White, Heterosexual, Christian Men, but when it comes to women, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transpeople, the poor, racial minorities, religious minorities and anyone who is not part of their little clique, then they are fair game to be regulated to a fare-thee-well.
In fact, as ThinkProgress notes:
The bill prohibits both direct and indirect funding streams that might potentially touch on the provision of abortion care and would make abortion as difficult to obtain as possible without actually criminalizing it. And it does this by arguing that money is fungible — that is, if an individual received a tax credit, she will have more private dollars to pay for abortion coverage.
. . .As CAP’s Jessica Arons put it, “H.R. 3 would redefine the concept of government funding far beyond the current common understanding. Rather than simply prohibiting the use of federal funds to directly pay for abortion, H.R. 3 would insert itself into every crevice of government activity and prohibit even private and non-federal government funds from being spent on any activity related to the provision of abortion any time federal money is involved in funding or subsidizing other, non-abortion-related activities.
Basically, this is a massive power grab by the Republicans to intrude into people’s lives in order to force a group of people- women- to conform to the religious edicts of one section within on religious group- the Christians. It amounts to an attempt to enforce their moral beliefs upon someone else by doing everything they can to hurt those who are in need. Of course, this is not an entirely new approach. The Republicans and the Christians have had a fascination with forcing women to be subservient for a lot longer than this current incarnation.
As far as many in the GOP are concerned, women are there to parrot what the men think, and to look pretty. Women are not suppose to be equal in any form, and this continues their push to make it seem as if women are too stupid to understand the moral, ethical, and personal implications of abortion.
As for LaSalvia, maybe he should learn what the bill is and what it means for ever lesbian and bisexual woman in the LGBT Movement before he opens his mouth again. Then again, he probably believes that women are not really part of the LGBT Community and longs for the days when this was just the Gay Community.
