Yesterday, Shepard Smith of Fox News shut down reference to the 14 decapitated bodies found in Mexico during discussions of the shootings in Tucson.
Last night, Geraldo Rivera challenged the statements of two guests who said the “Motive is not important. Prosecutors don’t look at motive.” Oh, really? Rivera was also unimpressed by his guests insisting that marijuana was responsible for Loughner’s violent behavior.
Fox commentators started yesterday, after Smith was off, talking about Loughner’s “favorite book” list on his Facebook page. They mentioned Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto. They left off 1984, Animal Farm, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and a long list of fantasy books.
This morning, the bread in the Fox and Friends bimbo sandwich presented screaming headlines about Jared Loughner being a “ticking time bomb” that wasn’t detected, just before they brought on a “forensic expert who investigated the Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations” to explain what happened in Tucson. Last time I looked New York City was over 2,500 miles from Tucson and the police out there have not released any details of the attack.
Two videos made the circuit yesterday – Sheriff Dupnik’s condemnation of the right wing in this crime and an interview with Congresswoman Gifford after she was put in the cross-hairs of Sarah Palin’s “reload” map. The tea party, the right wing media, the Republicans are desperate to distance themselves from Jared Lee Loughner and his Facebook rants about overreaching government and the gold standard. Yes, Loughner obviously has mental issues, but that does not excuse the right wing.
In 1983, just after the suicide bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon, a young man walked into a small country store in Vermont and shot the Russian-born owner in the face. President Reagan had called the USSR the “evil empire”, the bombing must have been done by someone very evil, therefore, in this young man’s mind, it must be the Russians’ fault and here was a Russian in his own town, probably a spy, definitely responsible for the deaths of all those Marines. There was no talk radio and no 24/7 news channels. He made this illogical leap just off the nightly news and President Reagan’s speeches. Simple, classic cause and effect. And the effect was a dead young woman who had risked everything to escape communism.
Shepard Smith showed yesterday why David Schuster called him the only real journalist left at Fox. Geraldo Rivera seems to be slowly remembering that he used to be a real journalist. The rest of Fox is spinning like a top. The Tea Parties are running for cover and the silence from Sharron “Second Amendment Remedies” Angle and Ron Paul are deafening.

I personally don’t feel he was a conservative or Republican. I can’t think of any conservative’s favorite books as ‘The Communist Manifesto’. Also, one of his classmates mentioned he was into a band called Anti-Flag (a band I often listened to in high school. Very political, very left-wing, very punk) If anything, he was an anarchist, and obviously suffers from some kind of mental problem.

Andy,
He was also into Mein Kampf by Hitler. Sound very Leftist? Only if you buy into Glenn Beck. As for High School, I remember people being into some pretty whacky things back in High School. Stuff they dropped pretty soon after leaving.
Besides, here is an analysis of his rhetoric, read up before commenting again http://lezgetreal.com/2011/01/sarah-palin-tea-party-right-wing-trying-to-run-from-rhetoric-az-shooting/
Besides, someone on the Left would have gone after McCain not Giffords. None of us are denying that Loughner is mentally ill. The problem is that he is your loony not ours.

Guess you missed the coverage of a classmate, detailing this sick little moron’s left wing ideology?
He is a crazy, anarchist nut job, yet mouth breathing morons like yourself take this as an opportunity to spew your hate filled, blamed pointing, agenda.

Trying to blame the Left for this is not going to work. Have a read. His rhetoric matches the Right’s.

That the Russians had Arab clients that attacked the rival American client of Israel is a separate issue from the murder of a particular Russian. The enthymeme is that the Russians could not have been involved because someone murdered a Russian in Vermont over it. Truth cannot be held hostage to violence.

Anon,
The author of this piece knew the man who murdered this young Russian. That was the excuse he gave.

Great article and coverage here. One small detail – it’s Tucson, not Tuscan – my hometown. Thanks!

Thank you for informing us. I corrected it. Unfortunately, spell check is not perfect, and sometimes mistakes happen.
