Review of Tania Katan’s “Saving Tania’s Privates”

Author and performer Tania Katan is bringing her one woman show, “Saving Tania’s Privates” to New York City this February as part of this year’s Frigid Fringe Festival. The show is based on her big gay award winning book, “My One Night Stand with Cancer.” “Saving Tania’s Privates” revolves around Tania’s experiences with breast cancer, her reactions to it at the ages of 21 and 30 as well as how it affected her friends, family and girlfriends.

Katan puts on a emotional roller coaster of a show. One second she has the audience laughing at her girlfriend Dawn, whose speech mostly consists of neanderthal grunts and four letter words and the next you want to cry into cake batter at her mother’s reaction to being told her 21 year old daughter has breast cancer. Tania isn’t above utilizing goofy hijinks to make her audience laugh with renditions of 80′s classics such as “Kung Fu Fighting” complete with Kung Fu kicks and “You Sexy Thing” accompanied by vigorous self groping. Don’t laugh too hard, because the next minute she is going to tell you that when she was sixteen she was growing a tumor in her breast.

One of the drawbacks of a one-woman show is that sometimes the artist performing the show can’t portray any character’s other than the protagonist, however, Katan is able to slip into the bodies of her friends and family in a way that makes it feel like the stage is full of people and action. Each character, her best friend, her mother, her girlfriends, etc, have different voices, different postures, different vocabularies, speech patterns and gestures.

The show has been playing for about three years in North America and critics can tell. Tania’s performance is polished without losing it’s feeling of spontaneity and the content is compact without losing detail.

Basically, go see her show. Bring someone that you won’t be embarrassed to cry in front of and a box of tissues. ”Saving Tania’s Privates” will play at the NYC Frigid Festival February 23 – March 5 and you can buy your tickets here: www.FRIGIDnewyork.info
