SAN FRANCISCO -Join Marriage Equality USA, Get Equal, California Faith for Equality and others as we engage in the annual national marriage counter action! Join and support same-sex couples asking for marriage licenses to render visible the government’s discriminatory law and to share our stories!
Join us on the steps of San Francisco City Hall at 11 a.m. on Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, 2011 to hear from the East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus and… speakers and then join us at the marriage counter. This is one of many events being held across the nation to “Request Marriage”.
Thank you for your willingness to take personal action in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples. You are joining an annual Marriage Equality USA (www.marriageequality.org) tradition which “marries” Valentine’s Day’s focus on love and commitment with February’s Freedom to Marry month activities intended to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of securing marriage equality for same-sex couples and their families. This year we are partnering with GET EQUAL (www.getequal.org), California Faith for Equality, Coalition of Welcoming Congregations and other grassroots leaders around the country.
EAST LOS ANGELES – Join us for a Valentine’s Day celebration of LGBT love/action to call attention to the way the law doesn’t treat all love fairly.
On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, at 11:30am we’ll convene at the East Los Angeles wedding license counter (near the intersection of the 710 and 60 freeways). LGBTQ couples will ask for a marriage license and, when turned away, will have the opportunity to commit to one another in front of clergy or lay leaders. We’ll ask them to tell their stories of love and commitment to the press to help us make the case for marriage equality.
If you or a couple you know is already married, that’s a great story, too!
This action is co-sponsored by Marriage Equality USA, CA Faith for Equality, GetEqual, Latino Equality Alliance, API Equality, Stonewall Democratic Club of LA, The Center Long Beach, Love Honor Cherish, and potentially Honor Pac, Gloria Molina’s office, Jordan Rustin Coalition, and more.

I hope they did something too Bridgette.
My comments were, and are, not directed at those who can’t do something like this for whatever (valid) reason they have. They’re also not directed at those who do contribute in other ways. They are directed at those who sit back, expect others to fight for them, and make all sorts of excuses about how they can’t get involved. Well, change doesn’t happen if you make excuses about why you can’t do something.
I watched video after video yesterday of demonstrations, and couldn’t help but wonder where all those who protest that they are being victimized, treated cruelly and unequally, were. Some of these gatherings were held on Sunday, so it couldn’t have been because they all had to work! I understand having commitments, but this is your life everyone! Sacrifice now will bring dividends in the end….trust me!
Again, I am amazed that the few who get out there time after time to do something about these issues, are still doing what they do when they don’t get the support from those they’re fighting on behalf of!
I am sure that there are many who stayed away because they really think “what’s the point…..nothing is going to happen for us”. Plus those who have that “well I’m ok” attitude. Guess what!….it does affect you in ways that you probably haven’t experienced yet, but your time will come, and you’ll wish you had done something. Those are the ones that I want to whip up into a driving force…..that’s how we make change happen for us.

I’m hoping the fact that no-one else has left a comment on here yet means that they’re all out at the demonstrations today?
My partner and I can’t go mainly because we are a binational couple and that would be seen as ‘intent to stay’ on my part. Something I’m not sure I can risk at this point, but if I could I would be there like a shot!
So, instead I am spending today emailing, phoning, and broadcasting to anyone and everyone I can think of to spread the word. I bombard the likes of Rachel Maddow and her colleagues at msnbc regularly, and today is no exception. They promise they read their emails………..so I can only hope!
But people………….it’s up to us to do our bit. There’s only so much others can do for us if we’re not going to stand up and be counted! I am amazed at the energy of activists like Melanie Nathan and Robin McGehee. They fight on continuously even though they have more than enough to do elsewhere, and really don’t have to do as much as they do for us. It’s up to us to honor that commitment and stand with them wherever and whenever we can. These are our issues people!!!
So, as they say where I come from……..”Get off yer arse and do something!”

I hope that they do something, Janice. VT is a bit tough to do it in, though, since we have marriage equality here. Besides, I don’t have a g/f so I can’t go out and apply for a license. I could always try marrying myself, I guess lol.
