We have a breaking news bulletin- Prefect of the Morals Gaius Julius Caesar was assassinated today. According to the reports, Caesar was stabbed some twenty-three times by various members of the Senate including Marcus Brutus. Tension had been boiling over between Caesar and his Senators, and the exile of the brother of Lucius Tillius Cimber appears to have been a chief motivating factor.
Caesar had achieved the status of dictator over Rome in recent years after his triumphant return from Gaul where he was busy fighting the Barbarians. Upon taking this august position, Caesar undertook several reforms in order to bring the unruly Roman government under control. This undoubtably lead to greater problems down the line.
Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Brutus were said to be the leaders of the assassins. There were a total of sixty known or suspected conspirators. Opposed to them, and loyal to Censor Caesar was Marcus Antonius, Caesar’s cousin.
There are conflicting reports as to what Caesar’s last words were. One report says that he muttered “You to, child?” before dying.
Rome is in a state of panic as civil war now looms with Caesar leaving no clear heir to take his place.
