Queerty Shutters Its Site

04/17/11-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Queerty , the widely read news, lifestyle and culture blog aimed at the gay and lesbian community, has shut down.

After being down since 13 April, Queerty made the announcement official this morning stating on their site:

After more than five years of serving the LGBT community with news and entertainment, Queerty has come to a close. The decision to shutter the site was not an easy one to make, and it is with great pain that we say goodbye to our loyal readership. From all of Queerty’s writers and contributors, from our first unto our last day, thank you for spending some time with us.

And in an e mail from publisher David Hauslaib, sent this morning, Hauslaib cited issues that began with some technical problems and that appear to have ended with Queerty’s corporate masters at 353Media opting not to continue operating the site.

Not long ago, the folks at Bilerico and even Pam Spaulding over at Pam’s House Blend voiced concerns about being able to continue to push forward with their sites, and it was expected that, since Queerty was funded through the corporations, that it would continue.

Unfortunately, corporations tend to be more interested in silly things like ratings and site hits than they are about getting a message out. Even we here at LezGetReal have to change a bit and have taken on a more straight out Progressive direction in the presentation of our site.

What this portends for the future of LGBT media is anyone’s guess. As fellow bloggers we certainly get the pressures that could finally lead  to the shut down of a site.

But be sure the Gay Girls of LGR will still be here everyday…. Plugging along to bring you the news and our view on the world….

And we wish the writers and staff of Queerty the best of luck in their next endeavors.

I am saddened by the loss of Queerty. It is a loss. They had their faults but hey they were there on the local and international front with a I don’t give a fuck attitude. Which some of us gay people will remain….even with spelling mistakes et al

I was a regular at Queerty. I am very sad to see it go, and I surely hope to run across some of my favorite commenters elsewhere.

LGR has operated on a different model. It seems that Queerty’s problems and inability to continue comes from the Publisher’s loss of operating Control. We at LGR have always kept the operation very close to the vest and with that I might add heart. We are a dedicated bunch of passionate souls who will keep growing the site in the way we have been doing for the past two some years….
