AJ Allen 24 Apr 11 – The 60-year-old British singer-songwriter is heading for the Shetland Isles to get ‘married.’
Joan Armatrading is to be joined in a civil partnership with long-term girlfriend Maggie Butler, who is said to be an artist. The couple’s special occasion, due to take place on 02 May 11, is listed on the public notice board outside the court house building on Lerwick’s Hillhead.
Armatrading MBE, is hailed as a pioneering female solo rock artist who started out in the early 1970′s. She is a renowned guitar player, mixing soul, blues, jazz and pop styles. In a music career spanning nearly 40 years she has been nominated for three Grammy awards in the USA, two BRITS in the UK and released over 20 albums, nine of which went Top 20 in the UK.
Drop The Pilot, Me Myself I, All The Way From America and Love And Affection are among her greatest hits. The Weakness In Me, has been voted the top lesbian love song in online polls.
Touring with Cyndi Lauper on her recent True Colors shows, which are aimed at promoting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality, she is still popular among her peers. Erasure and Rufus Wainright have also supported the shows.
Armatrading has released a new DVD and double CD Live At The Royal Albert Hall.
