Focus on the Family president Jim Daly has apparently decided to wave the white flag of war…er… surrender while speaking to World Magazine’s Marvin Olasky. Daly is likely responding to the recent set of polling showing that support for marriage equality today is far higher than it was for interracial marriage from 1969 (when it was made legal) to 1991. What is more, he continues to hold a rather delusional view that they are winning on abortion when it comes to the youth of this nation. The reality is that most people want abortion to be legal, but only moderately restricted. They have cut away at abortion rights through a thousand little cuts restricting it further and further while their thugs go out and bully doctors into not performing abortions under threat of death.
World Magazine’s Marvin Olasky: We’re winning the younger generation on abortion, at least in theory. What about same-sex marriage?
Focus on the Family president Jim Daly: We’re losing on that one, especially among the 20- and 30-somethings: 65 to 70 percent of them favor same-sex marriage. I don’t know if that’s going to change with a little more age—demographers would say probably not. We’ve probably lost that. I don’t want to be extremist here, but I think we need to start calculating where we are in the culture.
World: Where are we?
Daly: We’ve got to look at what God is doing in all of this. . . . Have we done such a poor job with marriage, is He so upset with our mishandling of it in the Christian community, along with our lust of the flesh as a nation, that He is handing us over to this polygamy and same-sex situation in order to, perhaps, drive the Christian community, the remnant, into saying, “OK, there’s no no-fault divorce in our church”?
World: What’s the current perception of gay activists about Christian marriage?
Daly: I sat down with one. He said, “You guys haven’t done so well with marriage. Why are you upset about us having a try?” We’ve got to look at our own house, make sure that our marriages are healthy, that we’re being a good witness to the world. Then we can continue to work on defending marriage as best as we can.

Let us be clear here, marriage equality is going to be hard to kill by a thousand little cuts. It is impossible to force gay couples to have to get sonograms in order to get married. The push for marriage equality is something that is important to enough Americans that they are invested in it. What is more, the use of social issues to get Republicans into office and distract from the economic damage that has been done to the country by them is starting to become more and more difficult.
But, Jim, don’t feel bad. Remember, what you think the Bible says is just what two thousand years of dead people have said it is. They just never got to come back and tell us that they were wrong.
