The headlines speak for themselves. “Don’t put bigotry up for a vote.” “Amendment is just a red herring.” “Beware of casting political ideas in stone.” “Gay marriage is about clashing cultures.” “The GOP is wasting time on marriage amendment.” “Betting on bigotry may backfire this time.” And so forth. In fact, the editorial headlines are probably causing conniptions in the headquarters of the National Organization for Marriage. Well, that and the fact that their own little poll has been shown to be nothing more than a fraud written by a biased pollster.
In fact, it goes well beyond that. According to one source, there is not a single newspaper in Minnesota which has decided to support the GOP in their attempts to enshrine bigotry in the state’s constitution. In fact, many of them are upset over the waste of time and money that is going into the effort. People want jobs is the message, and what they are getting is the culture war.
In fact, that is what is going on everywhere. The GOP are fighting the culture war while people are being turned out onto the streets because they can’t pay their mortgages.
In 2004, such amendments were a slam dunk for the GOP, and a wonderful way to pander to a population who were still leery about homosexuality. At the time, there were few mainstream gay characters, and most people probably wouldn’t admit to knowing anyone who was gay or lesbian. By 2008, Prop 8 passed by a bare majority, and while other ballot measures have been lost by the LGBT Community, the indicators are that this is changing.
The reality of the push is coming as religious groups are busy spending record amounts of money to pass their radical agenda to destroy the rights of women and LGBT Americans while enriching themselves. Numerous groups associated with Focus on the Family are spending heavily to lobby friendly state legislatures as part of their “Ignite an Enduring Cultural Transformation” plan. Their push is beginning to see a push back that may derail their efforts given the fact that more and more people are getting tired of the religious right telling them what to do.
The Republicans have returned to the culture war trough once again in an effort to try and garner victories in 2012. They are banking on President Barack Obama being unpopular, and the Democrats being easy to knock over. The problem is that people have already soured to the GOP. Many people already regret putting them into power, and their abandonment of job creation is just making it easier to make the case for the Democrats.
