Minnesota Legislature Moves To Pass Anti-Marriage Amendment While No One Is Looking

05/21/11-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire

With the world not ending today, Minnesota’s legislature is tasked with getting a budget deal in place with Governor Mark Dayton by Monday.

They are also being tasked by their anti-gay lords and masters to make certain that lesbians and gays in that state are not able to get married by having a constitutional referendum on the issue in 2012.

This is something that they are gladly doing because they anticipate a good deal of people coming out to vote for it and for them no matter whether or not they ever actually finish the budget. Sources have told Lez Get Real the Minnesota House will take up the bill some time after 6 p.m. Minnesota Time tonight and that the bill was quietly was put on the house calendar earlier in the day to avoid large scale press coverage.

In the wake of the disastrous prayer offered by Bradlee Dean yesterday, it was expected that this referendum was going to be derailed, but never underestimate the power of money and bigotry in a Republicans held state legislature.  Should it go through, Minnesota will cement itself as an anti-gay state, and one that open minded people and the LGBT Community will avoid with regards to jobs.  Business leaders have been largely against this bill since it was first proposed.

The Minnesota legislature has until midnight Monday to pass a budget for next year or adjourn without one.  It is looking increasingly like they would rather play with people’s lives and invade their bedrooms rather than do something like actually get a budget done and get some work done.

Minnesota used to lead the nation and the world in innovative ideas and creative solutions for problems and issues facing human realities. Now Minnesota (and more specifically Mn. Republicans) is attempting to drag that human reality back to the primitive “dark ages,” with regard to personal free-will freedoms, common sense, and forward thinking. What a shame, as Minnesota will have zero credibility with more progressive societies and advanced, spiritually uplifted and evolved civilizations.

Anti-marriage laws are not actually about marriage, any more than anti-abortion laws are actually about abortion. Both are about maintaining the ability to deny certain sections of the population their full and equal rights under the law. What we have seen in the capitols of many states this year as well as the US capitol is the clearest statement of the true values of the Republican Party: The idea that the privilege of wealthy, white male, Christian elites is sacrosanct and not only cannot be challenged but must be codified into law to ward off future challenges.
