You have to love how someone is more than willing to bend facts in order to try and make stuff up to feel persecuted. Recently, the National Organization for Marriage issued a brief report about the fact that there was a 25% increase in reported hate crimes against Christians…er…Catholics…um, first of all, they can’t decide. Apparently, NOM equates being Christian with being Catholic.
NOM is busy working with a report by a group called European Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians who just issued their five year report on anti-Christian sentiment in the world. In fact, here is one of the things that NOM says in their little stub of a report:
Excursus – United States: Hate Crimes Against Christians Up 25%
November 2009: New FBI statistics on hate crimes show a nine percent increase in crimes against religious groups in 2008 and an almost 25 percent increase in reported hate crimes against Catholics
Then there is the other problem with this attempt to distort the reality. In 2009, 18.9% of the victims of hate crimes were targeted because of their religious belief. Buried down in there is the statistic about Catholics.
In fact, here are the FBI’s reported numbers regarding anti-religious attacks for 2009:
Of the 1,575 victims of an anti-religious hate crime:
71.9 percent were victims because of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
8.4 percent were victims because of an anti-Islamic bias.
3.7 percent were victims because of an anti-Catholic bias.
2.7 percent were victims because of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.7 percent were victims because of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
8.3 percent were victims because of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
4.3 percent were victims because of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).
Of the 1,732 victims of anti-religious hate crimes:
66.1 percent were targeted because of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
7.5 percent were victims because of an anti-Islamic bias.
5.1 percent were victims because of an anti-Catholic bias.
3.6 percent were victims because of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.8 percent were targeted because of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
12.8 percent were victims because of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
4.0 percent were victims because of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).
Here’s the 2007 numbers for religion:
Of the 1,628 victims of an anti-religious hate crime:
69.2 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
8.7 percent were victims of an anti-Islamic bias.
4.3 percent were victims of an anti-Catholic bias.
4.1 percent were victims of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.5 percent were victims of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
9.1 percent were victims of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
4.1 percent were victims of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions
In actuality, there was an increase to 5.1% in 2008 from 4.3%. This reflects an increase of 16% not 25% for Catholics. For Protestants, there was a decrease from 4.1% to 3.6%. So the number that they cite of 25% is erroneous.
Between 2008 and 2009, there’s a 27% decrease in anti-Catholic crimes. That is correct, 27% DECREASE in anti-Catholic crimes. What is more, there is a 25% decrease in anti-Protestant hate crimes. With the exception of the anti-other religious violence (such as Buddhism), crimes against Atheists, Muslims and Jews increased between 2008 and 2009.
The problem becomes that when one lies or distorts, one undermines the very argument that one is making. This is normal for the NOM crew who love to lie and keep repeating the same lies over and over again.
There is some good news for the LGBT community in the statistics. The number of anti-LGBT violence was down by just over 200 cases in 2009. Here are the statistics for 2009:
Of the 1,482 victims targeted due to a sexual-orientation bias:
55.1 percent were victims because of an offender’s anti-male homosexual bias.
26.4 percent were victims because of an anti-homosexual bias.
15.3 percent were victims because of an anti-female homosexual bias.
1.8 percent were victims because of an anti-bisexual bias.
1.4 percent were victims because of an anti-heterosexual bias.
And 2008:
Offenders targeted 1,706 victims due to a sexual-orientation bias, and of these:
57.5 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-male homosexual bias.
27.3 percent were victims because of an anti-homosexual bias.
11.6 percent were victims because of an anti-female homosexual bias.
2.0 percent were victims because of an anti-heterosexual bias.
1.6 percent were victims because of an anti-bisexual bias.
So, in 2009, there were some 100 cases of anti-Christian violence in the United States while there were some 1455 anti-LGBT hate crimes (minus the whole 55 anti-heterosexual bias attacks).
It is not surprising that many within the anti-gay Christian Community are trying to distort any issue that they can. They are even upset with the fact that Brazilian gays are busy pushing a message of anti-homophobia in the Roman Catholic nation:
Christianity is becoming marginalized throughout Europe and the world in large part because it has become so rigid and destructive in its thinking that few people really want to be part of many of the Churches.
