Anyone who has been reading LGR since uh, last year’s Tribeca Film Festival knows that I loved “Spork.” The queer black comedy about an intersex teen coming of age. It’s funny, it’s beautiful, it’s fun and (spoiler alert) all of the queer characters make it out alive! Fourteen year old Spork (Savannah Stehlin) has a rough life. She is a female identified hermaphrodite, her mother died when she was four, she lives in a trailer with her brother and the other kids at school tease her mercilessly. Directorand screenwriter J.B. Ghuman, Jr. spins a tale of friendship, love and acceptance that is really weird, funny and sometimes heartbreakingly sad. It also represents the entire spectrum of the LGBT community, as much as a 80 minute movie can. Spork is a great date movie and seeing the film is a great way to support innovative LGBT artists.
