While Donahue Obsesses About Electrical Plugs, Santorum Tries To Make People Hate Religion

06/28/11-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire

It is a truism that those among the Religious Right are obsessed with sex. That is not shocking in the least, is it? They are not only obsessed with sex, but feel incredibly guilty about having sexual feelings as if, somehow, being human and wanting to be with someone sexually is wrong. What makes matters worse is the fact that these often Evangelical individuals lash out at people who do not have any guilty feelings about sex.

The Catholic League’s Bill Donahue ranted on PIX 11′s morning news show about the New York marriage vote and he invoked everything he could think of including polygamy, incest, and he even talked about plugs going into sockets. He also threw in the whole idiotic argument about how same-sex couples cannot raise children.

Here is the video, thanks to ThinkProgress:

Of course, there are those who want to raise the specter of anti-religious feelings in order to raise fears among people in order to get them to vote. In many ways, most of the Republicans are tilting at windmills when it comes to banning same-sex marriage. It will be impossible to push through a Constitutional Amendment to ban same-sex marriages in the United States simply because the Republicans are having a very difficult time getting enough votes in the House and Senate to pass an amendment, and because it will be incredibly difficult to get enough states to go along at this point given the changes in support for marriage equality.

That is not stopping the likes of Rick Santorum from continuing to push fear on people with regards to marriage. According to ThinkProgress:

Speaking to about 190 people at the Lyon County Republican dinner, Santorum pledged to continue his fight against same-sex marriage.

“The reason the left has gone after same-sex marriage is because it’s a two-fer,” Santorum said. “When you redefine marriage, you cheapen marriage. You make it into something less valuable, less special … [and] it is a sure bet that will undermine faith.”

Part of the problem for Santorum is that by trying to restrict marriage, it becomes cheapened not strengthened. In fact, marriage rates have gone up in states where marriage equality is the law, and divorce rates are down. Is there a direct correlation between the two, it is hard to tell. The second problem for Santorum is that many rather liberal clergy are already pushing back against this notion that Liberals hate God. There is a difference between loving God and hating people pushing their religion on everyone else. There are many Liberals who make Santorum look like a non-believer.

The Republicans are hoping to hold onto this particular issue in order to make it their own, but it is unlikely to work very well with the broader coalition. Simply put, they are preaching to the choir at this point, and doing that is not going to get them elected anything at this point.
