Same Hate Group-New Tricks
2 September 2011 by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
According to the Family Research Council and Judicial Watch, the decision to not pursue the defense of the Defense of Marriage Act in court had to have been made via some form of conspiracy. The two have filed lawsuits based upon the Freedom of Information Act in order to obtain documents in order to try and find out why the decision was made. According to Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton “You know, they made this decision, and … based on the timing of certain court filings [it looks like] it was made in concert with the homosexual activists and those who are seeking to redefine marriage… We just want to figure out what’s going on.”
Fitton continued his paranoia that, somehow, there was a conspiracy to do something that was wrong or illegal in this situation given the fact the Department of Justice decided to drop the case. He said “And our view, generally, is that this Justice Department is an arm of the political left and the activist groups, and I suspect the reason we can’t get documents about the decision-making and their communications with some of the notorious folks involved in this gay marriage debate means they have something to hide.”
Fitton went further in a press release saying “Once again the Obama administration is playing politics with the Freedom of Information Act to avoid telling the American people the truth about one of its indefensible positions. The evidence suggests the nation’s highest law enforcement is refusing to enforce the law to appease another special interest group.”
Fitton beleives that the decision is unprecedented and “could not have been done without the consultation from the well-heeled homosexual activist groups that President Obama was trying to cater to as he prepares for his election in 2012.”
Of course, the fact that it is not unprecedented and was done constantly by President George W. Bush and previous presidents has done.
The Family Research Council has also filed to get ahold of these documents. They did filed a FOIA request and the DoJ identified some 357 pages of email chains which fell under that request, but that 27 were deemed to be exempted from it and were withheld. The FRC has filed an administrative appeal in order to try and get those 27 pages, but the DoJ has not responded yet.
According to Tony Perkins, the president of the FRC, “When Barack Obama became president, he took an oath to uphold our laws – and not just the ones with which he personally agrees. If he’ll undermine this law, which one is next? This isn’t just a threat to marriage. It’s a threat to the entire democratic process. If the Obama administration has nothing to hide, then why stonewall? We have serious concerns that the Justice Department wants to hide evidence that it was doing the bidding of campaign donors and homosexual activists from whom Obama will need assistance for his reelection.”
It would, of course, have been nice if the FRC and JW had actually shown some concern about the President’s need to defend the Constitution back when President Bush was in office. Despite their complaints, the move was not unprecedented and is perfectly legal.
