Church Members Assault Gay Couple On Orders Of Pastor

For those who like to claim that being told by people to stop pushing their religious beliefs on all of us is a form of oppression, perhaps they should remember what real oppression looks like. Jerry Pittman Jr and his boyfriend Dustin Lee were physically and verbally assaulted by members of the congregation at Grace Fellowship Church in Fruitland, Tennessee. What makes this case worse is that the assault was on the order of Pastor Jerry Pittman Sr.

When the couple arrived at the church parkinglot last Wednesday, they heard Pittman Sr yell “SICK’EM!” At that point “My uncle and two other deacons came over to the car per my dad’s request. My uncle smashed me in the door as the other deacon knocked my boyfriend back so he couldn’t help me, punching him in his face and his chest. The other deacon came and hit me through my car window in my back.”

The assailants also used homophobic words which continued even after a Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on the scene. None of the bystanders or congregants tried to stop the assault, and neither did the Deputy Sheriff, who promptly refused to allow the victims to press charges.

The couple have since been allowed to file charges against two of the men who attacked them as well as Pastor Jerry Pittman Sr. Question is, now, will the Justice Department get involved here under the Matthew Shepard Act?

So much for Christians being oppressed, huh?

Two Christians WERE oppressed, by their fellow parishioners and their pastors. Not by the LGBTQ community though.

To be fair, that’s not a Southern Baptist church. They’re free range bigots.

I stand rebuked. Having dealt with such for much of my life I made a ill-advised assumption.

I really question if people in this church are Christian. This was a hateful thing to do.
