Spain’s six-year-old marriage law looks to be under threat as the Socialist government under Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero looks to be heading down to defeat. Polls show that the conservative Popular Party has a fifteen point lead over the Socialists. Zapatero’s government is under threat due to the bleak economic outlook right now, but following the usual tactic employed by people like House Speaker John Boehner, the PP is ready to vote down the same-sex marriage law rather than work to create jobs for people.
Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the PP, believes that the same-sex marriage law is uncosntitutional, but that he would ‘change’ it even if it was not ruled to be so. He stated “I will listen to the court, but I don’t like the fact that there is gay marriage and I don’t think it is constitutional. What I don’t like is the word ‘marriage.’” So, it comes down to semantics? The law was passed over the objections of the Catholic Church and the PP.
OnTopMag notes that:
While repeal of the law seems doubtful, gay and lesbian couples in the country are taking the threat seriously. In the past several months, a sharp uptick in the number of couples marrying has been reported in the Spanish press.
