Shorter University: No Gay Sex, Premarital Sex, Adultery, or Drinking

It should not be surprising that Shorter University in Rome Georgia is demanding that its employees renounce homosexuality or face termination, they are also forcing them to renounce premarital sex, and adultery as well. The statement also calls for the staff to not drink alcohol in the presence of students off campus or in public places where students could be.

Shorter University is linked to the Southern Baptist Convention.

According to university president Donald Dowless, the statement is suppose to be a “positive affirmation of who we are.”

That requirement about sex reads “I reject as acceptable all sexual activity not in agreement with the Bible, including, but not limited to, premarital sex, adultery and homosexuality.” It also says that “Shorter University will hire persons who are committed, Bible-believing Christians.”

Joe Frank Harris Jr, the chairman-elect of the board of trustees, said that the statement was approved by the board and was necessary for the faculty and staff “to understand the mission of Shorter, understand that we are a school of Baptist heritage, and that we are an institution of the Georgia Baptist Convention.” The GBC is affiliated with the SBC. Harris also stated that “They must understand the environment in which they work, and they must be loyal to that environment.”

Dowless said that the signing the contract was a “matter of conscience”, and that if someone does not sign it, they could face termination. Georgia law does not protect anyone from being fired due to sexual orientation, and it is unclear if Georgia’s anti-discrimination law extends to private institutions.

According to ABP News:

A new Shorter University Statement of Faith begins with the Bible: “We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, is the inerrant and infallible Word of God. It was given by inspiration of God and is the only certain and authoritative rule of every aspect of the Christian life.”

It ends with a statement on “life of the believer” that reads: “We believe that Christians should be consistent with Scripture in their character and in their conduct. We believe that the Bible is our supreme authority and that it provides the moral and ethical principles for personal conduct within and outside the academic community.”

I hope they also reject all government funding and tax breaks, including federal student aid. If not, someone should start a lawsuit.
