Chaz Bono is, yes, a bit on the hefty side, and yes, he has had sex reassignment surgery. Those two facts are being seen by the National Enquirer as reason to claim that the LGBT activist is going to die in four years time. This is patently false, of course, but that has never stopped the Enquirer. It is also not stopping the incoming lawsuit from Bono on this.
TMZ is reporting that the 11 November issue of the Enquirer has a headline that screams “Chaz Bono – ONLY 4 YEARS TO LIVE”. The article cites an ‘expert’ named Dr. Patrick Wanis who opined that “Chaz’s weight combined with the stress and various medications associated with his gender reassignment ‘increase Chaz’s risk of an early death.’”
Well, other than the fact that Chaz is claiming that this is a steaming pile of crap, it is a steaming pile of crap. First of all, there is only one medication that Chaz should be on by now- and that would be testosterone. (Hey, I had my first surgery last year and the only med I am on is my estrogen, sooo…yeah, I know something about that). What is more, before Chaz could have had the surgery, he would have had to undergo rigorous testing to make sure that he would not only survive the procedure, but that this would not hurt his health significantly.
Every year, there are some trans people who do not survive the surgeries or who do not live long after they are completed, but the doctors involved do everything that they can to limit that danger. Well, that is if you go to a reputable surgeon.
Chaz is suing. His legal team has begun pushing back and wants the Enquirer to print a retraction and to issue a public apology- right now. According to the letter from Chaz’ lawyer “The salacious and inflammatory headline and article were crafted for the malicious purpose of discriminating against our client’s gender and sexual orientation. Further, the statements you attribute to Dr. Patrick Wanis and your depiction of him as a medical doctor specializing in transgender health issues are highly misleading and blatantly false.”
Well, if the Enquirer does not follow the letter’s instructions, a lawsuit will happen and soon.
