Last night, another significant earthquake hit Oklahoma. For some reason, right now, all that comes to mind is people singing “Oklahoma” while falling over. “Oklahoma! It’s the pl-“ THWUMP!
There has been a two-hundred fold increase in the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma since the beginning of hydraulic fracturing or fracking in the oil shale of that state. What is more, they have seen a rise in the magnitude of the earthquakes. This weekend, we saw a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Oklahoma, and Monday night there was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.
Scientists believe that the fracturing involved in fracking can cause instability in the crust and cause more earthquakes as the pressure that has kept many of those faults from shifting.
The whole thing is being met with some humor though. One Facebooker, as quoted by NewsOK, wrote “Quakehoma, where shakin’ comes sweepin’ down the plain/And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet/When the shock comes right behind the quake…..” ;O)
This particular quake happened at the same time that the state was having a major storm and was under a tornado watch. . .alright, why is it that God seems to have decided to go after the Conservative states that are anti-LGBT?
Last year, a total of 1,047 earthquakes occurred in Oklahoma. Prior to 2009, there were an average of 50 quakes per year. That is a jump of almost 21%.
