Did Ron Paul’s Camp Bribe Aide For Support? Bachmann Certain Of It

There is the old saying that ‘all is fair in love and war’, but there is also a reality that, when things are bleak in a campaign, staff will jump ship. Recently, an aide to Michele Bachmann jumped ship and endorsed rival Ron Paul. While Bachmann’s chances of being the Republican nominee are sinking, Ron Paul’s are rising. Of course, Bachmann is now alleging some shadiness when it comes to that whole debacle.

Bachmann is alleging that Kent Sorenson not only jumped ship, but that he was paid to do so. Sorenson, who has since left the Bachmann campaign, is denying that.

Texas Representative Ron Paul is known for his outlandish and often historically proven ineffective or just plain wrong ideas. He is currently running a close second in polls of Iowa. This means very little given that Iowa is a caucus state, and that means that the person with the best organization will win, not the person who happens to lead in the polls.

Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann is known for her crazy statements. While she was once the frontrunner in the race, her star has since dimmed a lot.

Bachmann said of Sorenson that “He told me that he was offered money, he was offered a lot of money by the Ron Paul campaign. No one else knows about that conversation other than Kent Sorenson and myself.”

Sorenson countered in a statement that “I was never offered money from the Ron Paul campaign or anyone associated with them and certainly would never accept any.”

Bachmann’s Iowa political director Wes Enos also denied the allegations, and issued a statement that went through the Paul campaign. Enos stated “I can say unequivocally that Kent Sorenson’s decision was, in no way financially motivated. While I personally disagree with Kent’s decision, and plan to stay with Michele Bachmann because I truly believe in her, I cannot, in good conscious watch a good man like Kent Sorenson be attacked as a ‘sell-out.’”

Bachmann later told CNN that Enos has quit her campaign and been replaced.

As for why Sorenson endorsed Ron Paul and quit the campaign, he said that “There is a clear top tier in the race for the Republican nomination for president, both here in Iowa and nationally. Ron Paul is easily the most conservative of this group.”

The Washington Post noted that:

Bachmann in her comments in Des Moines also targeted Paul for criticism on other fronts, including the Texas congressman’s calls to withdraw U.S. troops from overseas commitments and to legalize drugs as a way to better regulate their sale and reduce profits to violent drug cartels.

She termed Paul’s foreign policy “dangerous,” and said he is “willing to legalize drugs in the United States, including heroin and cocaine.”

Bachmann has, so far, refused to acknowledge the problems her campaign is facing, including the likelihood of failure. Right now, Bachmann is one of those jockeying for third place in the caucuses.
