Sometimes the economy and the business plan just fail to gel when it comes to a store. Word has come down that Elizabeth Falkner has had to close her two locations- Citizen Cake and Orson. While Citizen Cake will remain open until the end of the year, Orson has already folded. Falkner has already stated “It’s heartbreaking for me, but I can’t do it anymore. I just have to start over, like everyone else.”
Citizen Cake will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm. Custom cakes are no longer available, but signature cakes and cookies are. Falkner also said that payments in cash are appreciated and that she will be continuing to do events through December.
But back to Citizen Cake. Falkner got the Fillmore Street lease from prior tenant Vivande in January 2010, but it didn’t open until late in the year, about 12 months ago. Despite making improvements to the space, she says construction fell nine months behind schedule, so they started behind the eight-ball financially.
Falkner stated that “The restaurant been busy and making money. It’s just that everyone wants their money before they can get back to them. We’re not totally in the weeds, but we’ll never get there.”
Both locations are on the market. As for Falkner, she is unsure what the future holds. She stated “My staff is so great, so dedicated. Mostly I just want to thank people for being just such loyal customers and fans, because it means a lot to me. I just love it here.”
