Blast From The Past: Gingrich Attacks Paganism, Same-Sex Marriage

Newt Gingrich has shown, once again, that the issue of same-sex marriage is, ultimately, about religious beliefs.  In a conference call for his Religious Right supporters, Newt Gingrich warned about the rise of Paganism and the efforts to grant marriage equality to all.

In the conversation, Gingrich states “It’s pretty simple: marriage is between a man and a woman. This is a historic doctrine driven deep into the Bible, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, and it’s a perfect example of what I mean by the rise of paganism. The effort to create alternatives to marriage between a man and a woman are perfectly natural pagan behaviors, but they are a fundamental violation of our civilization.”

The problem is, as it has always been, that the battle over same-sex marriage is one over religion, and this is a nation built upon the notions of Freedom of and from Religion.  This has been ignored throughout the past, of course, with many Pagan Native American tribes being forced to convert to Christianity, often with government backing.

In actuality, Christianity is the violation of the cultural base of the Anglo-Saxon, Celtic and Norse fusion that is the English and American cultural bases.  Christianity, like Judaism and Islam, is native to the Middle East, and was introduced, often at the point of a sword, to the cultures that lived in Europe.

Of course, it should be pointed out that divorce was banned under Christianity for a long time, but it has its roots in Paganism.  In most Pagan cultures, marriage could be dissolved.

The decision to go after Paganism is also probably not one of the better ideas on the side of Gingrich.  While that was the target of the Religious Right back in the 1990′s, these days, they are more worried about Islam than the rise of Paganism.  You do not hear people offering more than a mild token objection to things like the erection of a stone circle on a military base while people are furious if someone so much as talks about setting up a mosque.
