Homophobic Lawmaker Booted From Tennessee Bistro

Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield is probably not going to learn his lesson. The author of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill was kicked out of Knoxville’s The Bistro because owner Martha Boggs did not want him dining there. She asked him to leave her establishment. Boggs later wrote on her Facebook page “I hope that Stacy (sic) Campfield now knows what it feels like to be unfairly discriminated against.”

She later clarified saying “I didn’t want his hate in my restaurant. I told him he wasn’t welcome here. … I feel like he’s gone from being stupid to being dangerous, and I wanted to stand up to him.”

There were some who praised Boggs’ actions saying “You didn’t unfairly discriminate against Stacey Campfield. You have the right to refuse service to anyone, especially a poorly educated bigot.” And those who did not with one person saying “Denying service to a man because you don’t agree with his opinions is no different than denying service to a man because you don’t like his skin color.” Actually, no. One cannot choose what color one’s skin is, but one can choose to be an uneducated bigot.

Last week, Campfield showed his ignorance when he told Michelangelo Signorile:

“Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall. My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex…very rarely [transmitted].”

Of course what Campfield seems to ignore is that, while the percentage of gays with HIV/AIDS is higher than straights, straights have far higher numbers of people with HIV/AIDS, at least in the United States. HIV/AIDS is most commonly transmitted among straights in many places including Africa.
