No Money For Higher Education, But Money For Creationist Park In KY

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is showing just how not all Fundamentalist Christians belong to the Republican Party. Governor Beshear has called for a 6.4% cut to Kentucky’s higher education department and a 2.2% cut to the State Police force. He also wants to cut the budget to the bone. Still, while the people of Kentucky begin to feel less educated they can spend time at the massive creationist theme park that Beshear wants to give $43 million in tax breaks.

Of course, Beshear admits that the budget is “inadequate for the needs of our people. We should be making substantial investments in our physical and intellectual infrastructure to being transformational change to our state. This budget does not allow us to do enough of that.”

Well, that is nice. So, while Ark Adventure gets to have a huge tax break and a three-story tall, two-football-field long replica of Noah’s Ark. Oh, and speaking of infrastructure, the governor’s budget has also earmarked some $11 million to improve the highway interchange near the park.

The Huffington Post noted that

Ark Adventure is the brain child of Answers in Genesis, an evangelical group also behind the Creation Museum, another Kentucky attraction that has drawn millions of visitors since its opening in 2007.

Beshear, a Democrat, has long been a supporter of the project. The $172 million undertaking and its $43 million in tax incentives have made it through various state committees.
