Governor Christine Gregoire of Washington state has thrown her support behind marriage equality legislation. Gregoire is in her final year of her second term in office, and is hoping to make Washington state the seventh state to have same-sex marriage. She told the media that “It is time in Washington state for marriage equality. It is time, it’s the right thing to do.”
The state’s legislature goes back into session in two weeks.
Currently, there are six states which allow same-sex marriage. It is legal in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and Iowa. It is also legal in the District of Columbia. Whether or not the bill will pass is hard to gauge due to the fact that some conservative Democrats may side with Republicans on the issue.
Gregoire is not running for reelection.
