Ellen Degeneres As JC Penney’s Spokeswoman Has Hate Group Furious

“Stay neutral in the culture war”. That is such a lovely euphemism for “side with us by only showing off white, heterosexual, ‘traditional’ couples in your advertising and all other materials.” One Million Moms is at it again, and while they have every right to spend their money where they want, they should do so without quite so many lies and quite so much misinformation.

This all began because JC Penney announced that Ellen Degeneres will be the company’s new spokesperson. She has had some pretty successful commercial runs in the past, so this makes some sense. Where this hate group affiliate fails is when they stated “Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.”

JC Penney has been focusing on the younger family these days, which are far from the traditional family that OMM claims to be their big demographic. There are families that tend to be far more socially liberal, and less likely to be older in age. While the choice of Degeneres may not be perfect given her lack of children, her being lesbian is likely to not have any actual affect on their brand except to drive away a few people who hate lesbians and gays. What is more, given the perception of the number of childless lesbian and gay couples out there, and that they have more money to spend, it is unlikely that OMM is going to be as successful in getting much in the way of change to occur here, especially if the LGBT Community speaks out in favor of Degeneres as a spokesperson.

Michael Francis, the President of JC Penney, said in a press release “Importantly, we share the same fundamental values as Ellen. At JC Penney, we couldn’t think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience. Moving forward, we’ll be focused on being in sync with the rhythm of our customers’ lives and operating in a ‘Fair and Square’ manner that is rooted in integrity, simplicity and respect. We’re thrilled that she’s joining our team to help convey the exciting transformation under way.”

DeGeneres said in an accompanying statement “They have an incredible vision for the future and are completely re-inventing themselves to become America’s favorite store.”

Of course OMM states “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.”

Of course, if those customers with traditional values had been faithful to JC Penney’s over the last decade, the company would not have nearly collapsed in recent years and been forced to undergo a massive transformation.

One Million Moms is an affiliate of the American Family Association. The AFA has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center due to its constant and consistent use of misinformation and lies to support homophobic, transphobic and racist ideals.

For those who want to see JC Penney’s keep Degeneres as their spokeswoman, the numbers are “972-431-8200 (customer service) and 972-431-1000 (corporate headquarters).”

    Ok this is where hypocrisy really sets in with this group. Ellen is a spokesperson for Covergirl make up and there has not been a peep out of them. Why is that? Is make up ok to be associated with gay people and their buying habits where JC Penny’s is not.

    i never shop at penney’s,but now i will,just to spite these hateful right wing narrow minded women. how many of these ignorant woman have gay friends? i guess none. or jewish friends? since their only goal is to be busybodies & butt into everyone’s lives who are simply different than they… where did that oxymoron … christian charity come from? and if you don’t know the word oxymoron, look it up.

    Please Report the hate group One Million Moms to Facebook for hate speech and encourage your friends to do the same. FB policy claims to not allow hate speech on its site so this group is in clear violation of that policy. We also have started a petition at urging FB to remove the page that I hope you will sign and share. Thanks!

      Hey Kerry because someone disagrees with you does not equal hate speech. These people have a right to disagree with any of us on what they believe and will stand up for. As well we have a right to voice ourselves and stand up for what we believe. But way too often these days people will label someone a h8tr for no other reason other than they disagree with you on a certain issue. And this plays strongly in the gay arena. We live in a democracy and must be tolerant of others ideas and opinions when many times they may be set against you personally. This kind of freedom is what has made America great, the freedom of expression.

    These “moms” are probably the same butthurts who think that Atheists commercially celebrating a religious-free Christmas constitutes as a War on Christmas.

    I am so happy that there is a person on TV so caring and so good. Every day Ellen does something good for someone. And you will feel good to. Her kindness shines and we need more people like her. I would like to call her friend and tell you, because of her I will shop at your store. I am a Mother,k youGrandmother,and a widow with four sons, four grandchildren, two daugher in-laws.     I don’t think that sexual preference has anything to do with marketing and selling clothes and other accessories! I personally worked with Ellen for their new commercial and she is a wonderful woman! I have also worked with Elton John! I say stop judging people because of who they are! I would love to see how OMM would react if one of their own children decided to announce they are homosexual or even bisexual! I am a straight single mom and I have homosexuals in my family! I don’t keep my children away just because of it! How can they teach their children good moral values by hating others for silly little things like this?!? One of my favorite Sunday school songs has a line in it.. ‘As I have loved you, love one another!’ god doesn’t care if you are homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual, he loves us all the same and wants us to love others as he loves us all!

    “Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war…” Okay, if one looks at this as a “gay vs. straight” thing, having a lesbian spokesperson is not neutral. However, if this is how it’s going to be viewed, then having a straight spokesperson would also be bias. Perhaps OMM would be more comfortable if JCPenny were to invite an asexual individual to speak for their brand. Because, clearly, who someone is attracted to, and ultimately may have sexual intercourse with, is a major factor in whether they can speak for a company.

    Why is it that simply having a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered individual represent a company, is automatically “pushing gays in the country’s face” yet heterosexual kissing and sex in practically every show and some commercials is fine?

    JC Penny’s has asked Ellen to be one of their spokespersons. One Million Mom’s a conservative group is flooding the company with call’s trying to stop Ellen from being a spokesperson because she is a lesbian (and the gay agenda). When I called it was 200,000 against Ellen and 2 (that’s right) for Ellen. Please call them and let them know you support Ellen. As well let One million Mom’s know that they can not strong arm businesses with their agenda. And please pass this on.
