GLAD Sues Maine Over Treatment Of Maine Transgirl

She is known only as Susan in the court papers. This young girl went to school, was treated like every other girl in her school, and even her classmates and teachers did not see her as a problem. That is, until one fifth grade boy, at the instigation of his grandfather, followed Susan into the girl’s restroom and called Susan a “fag”. You see, Susan was born male, but has identified and lived as a girl for quite some time. In fact, those involved agreed that this was necessary for her psychological health and educational success.

Rather than disciplining the boy, the school no longer allowed Susan to use the girl’s room, and forced her to use the staff bathroom.

Gay and Lesbian Defenders and Advocates said in their release on this that “This segregation isolated Susan from her peers and sent a harmful message from the school that she wasn’t really a girl. Susan told us it made her feel like a ‘freak.’” That is an understatement. It is humiliating to have to go use a separate facility when you are trans. Doing so can be a trigger for the dysphoria that is a huge part being trans.

According to GLAD:

Maine state law prohibits discrimination in schools on the basis of gender identity. GLAD is representing Susan and her parents in their case against the school. We argue that the school violated that law when it refused to allow Susan to use the appropriate restroom.

Every transgender girl has the right to be treated like other girls. And we do not want another transgender student to feel like a “freak” ever again.

It goes beyond even that. Susan is entering the time when she will be at her most vulnerable. This could trigger severe depression, and possibly thoughts of suicide.

All because some asshole made his grandson his instrument of bigotry.
